Burton Winters - Priority One - the Fifth Estate

The Fifth Estate became the voice of Burton Winters last night and walked another leg in his journey home.

The CBC program was respectful - revealing - and powerful.

There is no doubt that "assets" that are owned and paid for by Canadians were not used in the best interests of Canadians but rather were used in a manner prescribed by a Rear Admiral. That same Rear Admiral did not make himself available to Canadians who wanted to ask questions through their public broadcaster.

Both Peter McKay and the Rear Admiral David Gardam went missing when it came to answering questions that were not in a controlled environment. A Minister of the Crown who had no problem receiving the use of "assets" after a recreational fishing trip - did not respond when the question would be "why not use the 'assets' for a 14 year old young man from Labrador?"

Both men did not display one morsel of the courage displayed by 14 year old Burton as he valiantly tried to find his way home. A Minister and a Rear Admiral could not find their mouths or in the alternate were not allowed to use them.

One thing is for certain; the inconsistencies in the stories provided previously by both were revealed by the CBC investigative program and they do require answers.

Most people watching were moved emotionally as Burton's baby brother and parents were introduced to the program. As the program progressed that emotion would have turned to anger and then finally would have become resolve - to find real answers and to correct the problem.

It was a reminder to our provincial and federal government members that they must correct this. Peter Penashue and Kathy Dunderdale cannot hide or cower under the watchful eye of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

I particularly liked the scripting which said the people of Labrador and Newfoundland have come together to fight for what's right and to fight for Burton and the loss of that precious young life.

We will walk the rest of the way together and we invite you - whoever you are and wherever you may live to join us.

Harper's Police State - Your Canada

The warnings about this right wing zealot went unheeded by Canadians during the last election. The media did their part by allowing this deceptive operative (aka our Prime Minister) to only answer a limited number of questions per-day (prescribed by Harper).

Harper - flanked by weak Progressive Conservatives like Peter MacKay - is free to change the face of Canada. When Justin Trudeau actually showed some guts and took Harper on - the media or what they have become - focused on the dissimilarity of Justin to Pierre Elliott. How about what the young MP was talking about?

Trudeau knows that Canada is heading to a place the majority of us do not want to go. The small minority of right wing fundamentalists must not be allowed to destroy our country. Jim Flaherty our current Minister of Finance will continue with the Common Sense Revolution until he is permanently removed from any position of power. The comparison of Ontario to Greece - from an economic perspective - is not something that happened under the current Ontario administration. The mess in Ontario was started by Flaherty when a provincial Minister. Flaherty has a country under his feet because previous administrations regulated banking and our economic system in a manner that protected it. Flaherty will destroy it.

Let's fully understand the danger we are facing.

1. Spying on Canadians by a police force the PM seems to want to control.
2. In total contrast to number 1 where the PM says the government should have such controls - the same man eliminates the gun registry so as NOT to control law fearing Canadians.
3. Use the armed forces personnel to do searches on political opponents.
4. Control the media through a fundamental shift of access.
5. Election spending laws - who cares? PM does not!
6. Robotic calls forging the identity of the Elections Office
7. Eliminate public funding for elections to diminish opposition chances at election.
8. Lying to parliament.
9. Preparing to dismantle universal health care.
10. Taking money from Seniors.

This is a short list of the regime we have democratically elected.

Let me predict that if this PM feels there is any possibility that his chances of re-election are slim - he may very well proceed in making changes to the elections laws.

Young Justin Trudeau - sounded a real alarm and I expect the NDP, Liberal, and Green Parties to fight this government with everything they have. If they are not up to it - move over and let the young MP's do what is necessary to save this country.

It's no longer funny to be living in a Harper State.

Super Bowl Syndrome - a state of mindlessness - and the Lower Churchill?

Of one thing I can be sure - despite the economic woes of the United States or the plight of the fishery and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador - grown men passing a ballie and grunting while hitting each other chest to chest - will always take precedence.

In Canada or Newfoundland and Labrador that may be replaced by Sydney Crosbie taking a piece of wood and albeit - skillfully - guiding a rubber disc into a net .

Somehow - the willingness to change ones schedule - skip an important anniversary or birthday - ignore anything else going on around amazes me - one will find a way to watch their "favorite" "athletes".

Most of these same people - a good chunk of the population - will not make the same effort to vote, attend a public debate on critical public issues, enter into the public fray of discussion, and/or be actively concerned that their children may not have a future in this province.

I can assure you that there are as many people or more willing to go to bat for their "favorite" hockey player and contact Don (clown) Cherry rather than go to bat for a pediatrician who may save a child's life.

Example: How many people made sure to watch the Super Bowl commercials to the point of being well-versed in them versus the number of people who read the Auditor General's Report or the Provincial or Federal Budgets?

How many people know more about the biography of Sydney or another "favorite" "athlete" versus the biographies of candidates seeking election in their district?

How many people would make sure they got out to see their favorite musician (in from the States or Upper Canada) or Bobby Orr etc, despite a snowstorm versus how many would use the snow as an excuse to not get to the polls?

57 million viewers watched the presidential debate 2008 versus 111 million watched the Super Bowl this weekend.

An estimated 59.1 per cent of Canadians cast votes in 2008 general election — a figure that appears to be a record low in the history of Confederation. Newfoundland and Labrador was at 48.1 per cent for that election.

What happens when a soap opera is preempted for an important political statement? Ask NTV!

We complain about a surgeon's salary - responsible to save the lives of relatives - while we are disgusted when our "favorite" "athlete" is traded after unsuccessful contract talks.

Average Salary of a NHL Hockey Player - 2008 estimates $1,906,793
Average Salary Cardiac Surgeon - 2010 estimates $ 275,000

Average Salary of a NFL Football Player - 2009 estimates $1,700,000
Average Median Salary of Canadian Soldiers - 2002 estimates $50,000

To make matters worse - the "hero's" of football, basketball, etc have real issues with anger management, drugs, alcohol, cheating.

I can certainly conclude that Sydney Crosby's concussion has received much more media attention than significant homelessness issues during the same time. Why? Because that is what we demand. Kate (the princess to be) will dominate the news from here to wedding day - every single detail will be examined and reported by panels of journalists in a way that I could only hope to see the Senate or Equalization examined. Why? Because this is what we demand.

While we watch populations of people around the world - fighting hard to get a democratic system - we will sleepwalk our way out of one. Democracy requires participation and it is not the responsibility of a few people - it is not the job of a few politicians - it is not make-work for sign manufacturers or volunteer canvassers or the lucrative payday for PR firms - it does not belong to corporations but does belong to you and me (despite how our politicians behave) - it is not a word but it is state of who we are and what we stand for.

We must take control of the following issues:

The Fishery
The Lower Churchill
The Forestry
Mining/Oil and Gas
Employment
Social Issues (Education, Health, Poverty, Crime, Child Advocacy and Protection, Housing)
Outmigration
Corporate Influence
Seniors Pensions

It must be our priority over the coming months if we are to secure our childrens' future.
Partisanship must stop and we must demand that government stop intimidating those who ask questions and criticize policies.

We must seek the best people to elect to public office and head up government agencies - not people chosen for us by an elite party club or through rewarding partisan loyalty.

Who do you think is ultimately responsible for decisions we are making for the children of today and generations to come?

The Super Bowl Syndrome - the puppet masters of politicians depend on it!

oops I interrupt this blog for an important announcement from your beer company...

A tribute to the Hockey Player...

A couple of weeks ago - we learned that certain banks were causing further grief to the spouses of our soldiers killed in war - by questionning the validity of mortgage insurance because of how they died - "at war".

It was then I knew I had to celebrate the professional Canadian hockey player - you know the man that gets more attention from our Prime Minister than the families who lost loved ones in Afghanistan. You know the people who make millions a year shooting a rubber disc up and down the ice - shooting at a heavily armoured goalie.

I had to pay tribute to our hockey players because they lay their lives on the centre line every time the whistle blows. Most are there to answer the call the next day. The travel they have to put in travelling between Canada and the USA for months on end - away from their families - and children.

Consider the home-coming of a Stanley Cup winner - where the media may freely shoot their stories - usually not in the dark behind a fence. The thousands of cheering fans at the airport - to quickly return home and get ready for the victory parade.

Then they can retire in dignity - in a BC condo neighbours to ex-politicians that voted our people to combat.

Then I would like to to think of our soldiers - and tell me what you think the problem is. You see if we cannot treat our people we send to battle - some of whom never return - as well as we treat a hockey player - then we should not have the right to enlist them.
