Trevor Taylor running for Tory leader?

Well the Tories should be ecstatic - looks like Trevor Taylor might be getting ready to throw his hat in the ring.

Taylor really lost it today in his Telegram opinion column READ HERE

Trevor decided that a frank discussion on the state of politics in Newfoundland and Labrador was in order.

His column takes many shots at the current crop of politicians in our province. He says of Liberal leader Dwight Ball: "Dwight Ball, while a nice guy, is not seen as a leader who is going to inspire the six or eight strong individuals he needs to step forward to form his first line."

A leader - Trevor - is somebody who is willing to step up and take on the hard tasks and do so without unnecessary drama and bravado. A leader - Trevor - is somebody who can bring people together from all sides of the political spectrum and make it work for the people. A leader - Trevor is somebody who does not quit in the face of adversity and finds a way to rebuild and connect. Dwight Ball is exactly that - and everything you are not.

Trevor expounds on "Cabinet Material" like somebody who knows what that is. Taylor was in Cabinet and accomplished what? Then Trevor quit. Then Trevor quit. Now Trevor complains.

He threw the entire backbench of the Tories under the big blue bus and is awaiting the coming of the next savior. Another man - like his leader Danny Williams - who quit. Or maybe like his leader Kathy Dunderdale - who quit. They are after all like him - they quit.

Considering your sage commentary - I expect your purported truth, wisdom and common sense is exactly what you will offer fellow Tories - by running for leader.

You remain a partisan sniper - who knows the political wilderness for your party is just around the corner. Now have the guts and step to the plate - and show us what you believe makes a real leader.

The recycled failed Tory Cabinet is exactly what you need to fix. What does it take to be a Cabinet Minister or leader Trevor? Why not show us.

Is Rex Murphy seeking PC leadership?

CBC's Point of View with Rex Murphy was very telling this week. I invite you all to listen to it HERE

Get your pencils out and mark down how many times Murphy says Newfoundland or Newfoundlanders without any reference to Labrador. Despite the CBC's caption below the video: The National's Rex Murphy looks at Kathy Dunderdale's exit from the top post of the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. In case you missed his latest essay, click on the video above to watch. Murphy refuses to say Labrador.

If Mr. Murphy has a problem with the constitutional name change precipitated by the people of Newfoundland and Labrador - maybe he should tell us.

Now let's get to the content of his opinion on Premier Dunderdale's resignation. At least we know his is an opinion and not news - as Mr. McLeod of the Telegram likes to do.

He makes the following points:

1. Kathy Dunderdale following her own script on leaving
2. There was no political or personal scandal or turbulence to make her step aside
3. The "heavy recent storm" caused her problems - with a blackout
4. Sane response to political difficulties

For Rex to believe that rushing back from a vacation in Florida - with rumours abound on potential defections and caucus dissatisfaction - to quit - a few months after a convention wherein there was "solid support" - was a person following their own script is detached.

To believe that Dunderdale was not experiencing extreme turbulence following downed polls not poles - is detached.

To say that part of her misfortune was rolling blackouts from a "heavy recent storm" is detached and just out-in-out incorrect.

To say that the Premier's was a sane response to political difficulties - must mean she was daft. The easier way to deal with it was to listen to the loud voices of the people of Newfoundland AND Labrador telling her they did not like her direction. Only a less than sane person keeps banging their head of the same wall of resistance over and over again while expecting a different outcome.

Perhaps Rex Murphy should seek the PC leadership:

1. He displays arrogance
2. He likes to spin
3. He could care less what the people think - it's Newfoundland - not Newfoundland and Labrador
4. His dismissal of Labrador for the benefit of the Island of Newfoundland

Really Mr. Murphy if this is the best you can do - perhaps you should follow Ms. Dunderdale.

O'Brien and Sullivan Communications 101

Last week David Cochrane interviewed Ministers Sullivan and O'Brien regarding - in part - the resignation of Kathy Dunderdale and what went wrong.

First off they both admitted that Kathy Dunderdale told them that she would resign before the next election. To the contrary Kathy Dunderdale told the people of the province and hundreds of PC delegates just a few months ago that she was staying put for the next election.

DO YOU SEE HOW THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT COMMUNICATED WELL?

Yes she told certain people she was going and others she was staying.

Second - Sullivan indicated that Kathy resigned mostly for the good of the party - to allow them to reorganize - regroup - and refresh. From what? Your party is not governed by polls is it? That's what you claim.

DO YOU SEE HOW THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT COMMUNICATED WELL?

Yes she said one thing one day and then did something contrary to that which was said the next. Further Sullivan's thought on refreshing - hardly seems likely when she and O'Brien remain. Why didn't they leave for the good of the party? They were as responsible for decisions - as Cabinet Ministers - as the Premier was. David referred to both O'Brien and Sullivan as strong supporters of the Premier - perhaps because they put forth just that. If you watch the interview however - if they are her friends - she doesn't need enemies.

Third - Kevin O'Brien claims that she was the first Premier who encountered social media. Really? I remember a significant load of it on former Premier Danny Williams. Be that as it may O'Brien exclaimed that it (social media) was used entirely against her.

DO YOU SEE HOW THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT COMMUNICATED WELL?

Yes - it is false and misleading. Actually it's a lie. It's doubtful Kent, Lane, and Collins have fingerprints left from Twitter presence - notwithstanding loyal Tories tweeting with vigor and venom.

Fourth - Then Kevin O'Brien adds that part of her problem was the "hostile media". Cochrane challenged him on that and then said "no not really".

DO YOU SEE HOW THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT COMMUNICATED WELL?

Guess that one's pretty simple. Propaganda - called on it - then withdrew.

Fifth - and Susan Sullivan should have plead the fifth instead of carrying on. Twitter and Facebook she said has been taken hostage by a "mob mentality". She compared it to a child's game whisper - where one child whispers to another down a chain of people and then they hear what comes out on the other side. She exclaimed that people under the cloak of anonymity made a statement which was partially untrue - and then others added to it and spread it - all the while changing the original point.

DO YOU SEE HOW THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT COMMUNICATED WELL?

The anonymous ones the Minister speaks of contain as many Tory hacks as those from any party. The most vocal opposition to this government's policy on Twitter - Facebook - and Blogs are not anonymous. The use of the words "mob mentality" is similar to other words they use to describe engaged citizens - such as "conspiracy theorists" and "naysayers". These words have been communicated so well - that even some media outlets use them.

So if the purpose of O'Brien and Sullivan was to reorganize - regroup - and refresh - they did nothing of the sort. I guess they should resign now as they also cannot communicate a message. If they did communicate what they meant - then we are in more trouble than we think.

Now just imagine having a conversation with them on Muskrat Falls?

Collins shows loss of Premier in vain for PC's

Newfoundland and Labrador has many serious issues on the table. Not the least of which are the Muskrat Falls legacy of economic horror, health care, the Auditor General's findings, chronic unemployment and continued secrecy in government. The governing PC's have a few serious issues of their own.

One would think that the loss of a Premier - due to crashing polls, a complete disconnect with what the people of the province want, and a number of people dead during the blackout - would wake-up the skeleton left behind. Unfortunately - it's business as usual for this arrogant crew of partisans.

Sandy Collins at the height of this mess - decides - it's business as usual for him. What device was Sandy using to tweet? Who pays for the device?  Who employs Sandy? Who pays his salary and benefits? He is a wannabe farceur - who confuses the role of his office with his amateur hobby.

He demonstrates this government's trademark arrogance and embraces the opportunity to verbally abuse ordinary citizens. His level of immaturity is obvious when one considers what he chooses to spend time on.

Your Premier just resigned - your party is in the tank - and Newfoundlanders and Labradorians do not want your government anymore. Playing twitter tag may be amusing to you but perhaps you should try marbles instead.

Collins has not learned a thing from the past month or so and clearly he plans to carry on - business as usual. No doubt that will land him a plum Cabinet post.

First demonstration:

It all started when Brad Cabana and Sandy Collins were having a few twitter jabs.

  1. I notice Kathy didn't give Sandi a hug or kiss as she left..

  2. Bradley! It's you! Have you heard the news?...there's a leadership race coming up? You in?

  3. No b'y, I left the sinking ship remember?

  4. You left?....or you were ignored to the point where it was just kinda...how do I say...awkward?

  5.   what an interesting yet commonly arrogant response. Business as usual.

    1. You mean you cheated so publicly that the country laughed out loud, and it was...awkward

    2.   Ahhhh...yeah...this feels awkward again Bradley.

    3. Ya, akward to break the rules to get the woman in,and then akward to stab her in the back to get out

    4.   listen I wanna make it up to you....i'll pay the $5k or whatever it is and you run this time 'round k?

    5. hI'll pay 5000 for you to stop using"k" like a child on a playground. grow up

      1. Interesting offer MT@SandyRCollins: listen I wanna make it up to you....i'll pay the $5k or whatever it is and you run this time

      2. Peter, if he accepts I may have to ask you to spot me $5k...that cool?

      3. not all of us make parliamentary secretary money!

      4. True, I hear though one of those positions just opened up:) Want me to drop your name?

      5.  you.

        1. 9h
How Sue Kelland-Dyer-ish of you to be trolling. Are you ever NOT on Twitter?

Dunderdale's supporters pulled the plug

I watched yesterday - as most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians did - Premier Kathy Dunderdale resign.

It was not a sad time for me - I did not like her leadership style or the policies she rammed down our throats.

The resignation speech was - in part - a list of "accomplishments" of her government - all the wonderful things. If this was the case - why would she resign? Why are the polls reflecting that close to 80% of the people do not want her leadership or her government?

What I heard yesterday was a continued drone of - "communication" problems. Was she a great communicator? No - however that is not the reason the vast majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians do not support her or her government.

It does not matter who communicates Bill 29 - we don't want it.
It does not matter who communicates the Muskrat Falls deal - we don't want it.
It does not matter how she relates the coziness with Stephen Harper - we don't like it.
It does not matter who makes excuses for not holding an inquiry on the death of Burton Winters - we want one.
It does not matter who communicates the CETA deal - the people are not satisfied with the amount of information provided.

It's not the messenger - it is the message.

In this regard - all the tired Cabinet behind her - should have gone with her. Are they delusional? Do they think if they get the one line spinner type like Brian Tobin or the bully type like Danny Williams - the policies they are trumpeting would be any more acceptable? What ever happened to the simple reasoning? Is it in anyway possible that the people do not like the policies and deals of this government?

On Muskrat - they fired everything at us - more expert communicators and communications than any person should have to suffer. They did not and do not have the peoples' support for this deal.

And by no means was she going to throw any of the backroom antics out into the open. We are to believe that Kathy Dunderdale ran back from Florida to resign - cause - she wanted to?

If the so-called supporters of Dunderdale want to patronize this woman by saying you are doing wonderfully my dear - but it's just the way you say it - or do it  or the way you look - the I guess the Premier should really examine her choice of "friends".

For me it's this - the people do not like what you are doing with the province. In that respect we do not support your Cabinet who were involved in the decisions.

The other part of her speech - was what could be termed the human part - the emotional part. In this she thanked her family - as we all should thank our families. The part about sacrifice I can do without as many professions and jobs - particularly those involved in protecting and saving lives - make that sacrifice for their entire careers - 50 years of it in some cases. Next up was the "women's" advancement discussion. As a woman - I can say she did nothing whatsoever for me as it relates to advancing women in politics. She was one of the most extreme partisan politicians I can remember. If you were a woman and supported her and her government - yes you would be looked upon favourably. If you were a young PC or a man who supported her and her government - you would be looked favourably upon. If you were a woman who was critical of her government and policies - she had no problem slicing and dicing you - and remember - she had the power to abuse it.

If she would like to confirm that she at no time discriminated against a woman because they were publicly critical of her government and policies - then I will challenge it.

All in all - I found Premier Dunderdale to be arrogant, out of her depth on many issues, too delighted with her power, and generally incompetent.

Do I care about how she looks or how she speaks (outside being relatively literate for the position), or that she is a woman? No. I care about how she conducts herself while in such a position, the decisions she makes and how she treats the people who put her there.

I care that the Premier and her government spent many hours of public media condemning those who disagreed with her policies and deals. The use of the words partisan, naysayers, and conspiracy theorists to describe the population one serves are not the words I want to hear from a "leader".

On the continued media thread that communication is the big problem here - that's assuming we - the people - are all not able to really see the benefits of something unless it is communicated by the likes of a John F. Kennedy? It is quite likely that when the vast majority of a population cannot see the benefit of one deal or another - it's because - it's not beneficial for them.

A politician - like all people - can be thanked for service - however to place them on a pedestal above many in a population who serve in some capacity or another is wrong. Yesterday the Premier quit her job. Her choice. It says a great deal however about the commitment to finish the job you started. Imagine if other professions could or would do that - imagine the mess we would have.

Her Cabinet and caucus who supported her leadership and policy choices did nothing much to prevent the resignation - that we can see anyway. So the wannabe new Premiers and their supporters spent most of the day blaming the people and or media for "not understanding her".Yesterday they wanted us to feel bad for causing her to leave.

The majority of people may not have supported her - but the majority of people could only replace her on election day. The Premier's supporters pulled the plug. It's important to add that they pulled the plug for polling results that were achieved through the policy choices of the entire Cabinet.

Government by Remote Control - Can't Turn the Channel

How many Premiers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

and yet - the light bulb still did not work.

The title suggests many things - but I will start here.

How is it that Kathy Dunderdale resigned before Ed Martin?

How is it  she was essentially fired by a caucus that did not insist on the removal of Ed Martin.

Who do permanent interim everything Marshall and incompetent Energy guru Martin work for? Is he still there?

"Carry on Government" - the title of a feature tragic comedy - where a resource wealthy jurisdiction is controlled by a megalomaniac - through puppets of convenience. NOTE: Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. It is at times like these that I miss the artistic works of Jerome Kennedy. Surely he can do at least a Limerick on this - of course in collaboration with one of the Loyola's.

Kathy Dunderdale's resignation will be the subject of the next post. I promise!!! Sounds like I'm considering political office.
