Danny Williams Confirms Emera Deal a Giveaway

The following is a partial transcript of Danny Williams as a guest on Out of the Fog as Leader of the Party on December 04 - 2002

Question - Krista Rudofsky: Now Premier Roger Grimes has stated that a deal with the Lower Churchill does seem imminent, from what you know of the details you have heard about, how does Newfoundland and Labrador fare in that deal?

Answer - Danny Williams: Well you know, we are very concerned about it as a Party and I think that is indicated by the people of the province, there are lots of major issues. I mean the fact that any deal with Quebec does not address the Upper Churchill is a very serious issue for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Once bitten twice shy, you know people in Newfoundland and Labrador realize that you know, Quebec gets 2 million dollars a day in profits from the Upper Churchill. I mean what that could do for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in 20 days it would be $40 million, what that could do for health care, education, or jobs.

The issue of recall is important, we in fact will be able to buy our own power back for more expensive than what we sold it to them in the first place, it is going to cost us more to get our own power back.....

Today in Question Period the Premier (Roger Grimes) confirmed that there is only going to be 50 long term jobs created in our province. Whereas the Premier of Quebec is saying that, Bernard Landry is saying, this is a blessing from Heaven, there is going to be numerous jobs and opportunities for Quebeckers, so once again it appears that we are giving it away, we are selling it out...

The Emera deal sells cheaper power to Nova Scotia, provides 50 long term jobs for our province and does not address the Upper Churchill. The Progressive Conservatives, Danny, Kathy, Jerome and all the caucus members must have been misleading the people of the province in 2002 right?

During the same interview - Williams addressed ownership as well. I will post that next.

ICU OCI - When People of Good Will Disagree

So a Picture is worth a Thousand Words - Good then this will be a short post.

Funny - Minister Kennedy is not this receptive with all citizens who want a chat or give an opinion. That is particularly the case when he does not like commentary against government - except? It's all good - keep on exporting raw energy or whole fish - right?

Danny's idea of punishment was skewed - do not let this cost us yet again!

The cost of an error.

As we muddle along into Danny's vision of a legacy - we should be reminded what happens when we as people do not ask questions regardless of media and opposition disinterest.

The Upper Churchill goes down in the history of western world developments as one of the worst deals ever to be perpetrated on a people.

Today as we see Hydro-Quebec lower its rate for Quebec consumers - we are pondering an astronomical raise in rates to accomplish what Nalcor says is a need to get rid of Holyrood.

Imagine our children having to deal with Holyrood and Labrador oil generated facilities while Hydro-Quebec and the people of our neighbouring province enjoy virtually complete hydro generated power - including the fabulous 5000 MW's from the Upper Churchill. That is a cost of that mistake. Our children should be enjoying complete clean renewable hydro energy but for the mistakes of Joey Smallwood, John Crosbie, Bill Rowe and others. We can thank a silent opposition of the day as well.

Imagine our children leaving Newfoundland and Labrador to work in processing facilities powered by our energy and value adding from our resources. That is the cost of such a mistake.

Imagine a place full of renewable hydro losing industries and not gaining them at a time when energy hungry smelters and refining facilities seek such energy in today's marketplace. That is the cost of that mistake.

Imagine our children's shoulders burdening billions in debt as we continue to lose billions we could have enjoyed - if a mistake was not made on the Upper Churchill contract.

Imagine - for years - we accepted a significant reduction in equalization payments because we produced the energy from the Upper Churchill - even though we were not the beneficiaries of the tremendous profits. Ottawa looked and said - even though the deal was bad - you could be collecting more - so we will reduce your payments as if you were. Billions more in lost revenues - a cost of doing a bad deal.

Imagine - had we simply waited - we would have attracted industry and developed the power for the benefit of Labradorians. Imagine what could have been in the 70's and 80's as oil prices rose from 60's prices of $3($18 adjusted for inflation) a barrel to $38($90 adjusted for inflation)dollars a barrel and now even greater again. That attractive hydro power that uses water not oil for fuelling generation. That water that is not impacted by an oil embargo from the Middle East in the 70's or the civil unrest in Libya today.

Imagine we would be debt free like Alberta - we would be utilizing a significant portion of our oil revenues for a heritage fund so that our grandchildren benefit from the non-renewable resources we are extracting now. Instead it is keeping us artificially afloat - keeping our growing budget in health care intact - until that is - when the oil is gone. That too will be a cost of that mistake.

Imagine the pride and not anger we could feel if we had just questioned a little more and waited for the right opportunity for us. Labrador's population could have exploded and industry could have flourished. We would not blame Quebec for our own mistake and their intelligence in choosing risks.

Here we are again - Danny says the Emera deal will right the wrongs of the Upper Churchill. What a joke. Does he take us all for fools? Apparently and that continues on with his successor Premier Dunderdale. We are mad at Quebec so we will go around them - be damned the cost - we will punish them.

Danny's idea of punishment clearly is skewed. Stephen Harper's lie robs us of 10 billion dollars - he punishes him by electing all Liberals (who cares) and by sending Fabian Manning to the Senate (oh the pain). Currently he wants us to punish Quebec by ramming through a hydro project which ships even more power out - to another company (publicly traded) which is vulnerable therefore for takeover. Punish Quebec by driving our power rates through the roof while making competitive jurisdictions cheaper.

Danny did not right the wrongs of the Upper Churchill as he promised - if there was a deal to be done on the Lower Churchill. I believe if it's even possible he's made matters worse.

First the unearned arrogance of the PC government continues to assume that the best possibility for power development is for export. Prove this to me and the rest of our people. Prove how exporting even more of this industrially attractive resource helps Newfoundland and Labrador more than if we used the power here. Show us the numbers - the normal economic studies that would be completed to reach such a conclusion. The government will have studies on everything but the economics of shipping out hydro power versus utilizing it through industry in Labrador.

The Upper Churchill will continue to punish generations of our people for decades to come - we hardly need to couple that misery with the untested policy of yet another Churchill development.

Why would industry ever consider coming here if we so willingly ship it to more convenient jurisdictions. Jurisdictions that already enjoy an advantage through the use of our raw resources?

We lose our fishery - and we sit and take it.

We lose our forestry - and we sit and take it.

We lose billions of dollars from a Harper lie - we sit and take it.

We are now on the verge of losing yet another tremendous resource - will we sit and take it?

What will it take for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to stop taking it and stand up for their children and grandchildren?

Why are we not in the streets and demand action?

Danny bluffed and bluffed and bluffed. We lost and lost and lost - on his way out he has asked us to giveaway yet another resource. This time say no. Just say no.

cable atlantic, persona, danny, dean, and brian 1st Fibre Optic 2nd Lower Churchill???

Have a look at John Noseworthy's Auditor General Report  and scroll below what Sue's Blog posted when the deal was first done. How about the Lower Churchill Deal - designed for a flip???

ORIGINAL POST 2007
I guess most of the readers are familiar with the various TV shows on flipping houses - where the buyer picks up a property - renovates and or adds an addition and flips it for a profit.

Newfoundland and Labrador has it's own new program now - called Flip this Utility. I cannot for the life of me figure out why CBC or NTV have not picked up the pilot and a couple of completed programs in the can. The least the Telegram or VOCM could do is give the reader and listener some highlights of the new series so we can encourage one of the TV networks to pick it up. I don't expect "Out of the Fog" would be interested.

The program is filled with energy as the hosts and flippers are interesting well known characters - that give it a kind of soap opera appeal - mixed with a tinge of a reality series.

The creator of the series is a well kept secret but I think it's fair to say that Brian Tobin might be the producer and the government of Newfoundland and Labrador acts as a partial financier of the renos.

Te pilot takes place in Newfoundland and Labrador when Tobin was the Premier. He decided after some encouragement by the local cable company that it was time to reno the government's communications contracts. So Tobin without an RFP or tender call picks Cable Atlantic for the investment.

Cable Atlantic picked up the government contract and away they went. Shortly after the owner of Cable Atlantic flipped the property for a tidy profit to Rogers - not a (local) company.

Dean MacDonald - Danny Williams - Ken Marshall - and Brian Tobin are featured predominantly in the pilot and the backdrop is priceless - as one of the flippers - apparently not believing that Tobin's government had done a good job became the leader of the other political party and went on to become Premier.

The second program starts off with one of the flippers of the first property picking up Persona - and while Danny is becoming Premier - Dean Macdonald leaves Rogers - the purchaser of the renovated Cable Atlantic - and starts to work on Persona. Not to be left out Brian leaves as the Premier and he ends up on the Board of the new property to be renovated and does work for the company that picked up the first flip.

The third show features all the same players - but this time the Premier who was a flipper on the first - decides government needs some reno work itself - and Persona who is ready to be the second property - just happen to come together with the same plan. So instead of going out to the market to find another property to invest in - government decides why not just deal with the same gang. No tender of RFP needed. It worked before. Same storyline - local company gets reno...

Now this episode gets real fun as the biggest communications (telephone) company Aliant experiences a real tragedy and has a fire in one of its buildings knocking out cell and telephone services far and wide. Danny - and Dean - recognizing  this irony jump all over this to convince us that another reno is essential.

They send out a new character Trevor - to announce all the plans - and poor Trevor is all over the map as to exactly what it is they are doing for the reno and why. He fondly becomes known as the "duct tape man".

Then our Minister of Business Kevin O'Brien jumps in - to be honest witchu - and starts selling the audience on the real value in this property.

The audience is in for great laughs as everyone runs around trying to figure out if they want strands or a whole network or how many fibres they will need and whether or not they will light them. And if they are lit - who will do it. The funniest part is when the neighborhood spokesperson won't reveal who is going to pay what for maintenance and the whole meeting goes up when one of the property owners asks for an administration fee to sort it out.

Once again the appeal to us the audience is that another local property wants to reno and expand. Unfortunately - once again the audience is torn when the property is flipped to another company on the mainland.

Unlike the first flip where the profit details were available - the producer will keep us guessing as the real profit off this one will not be known.

The producer is not talking but the last episode might go something like this - Danny leaves as Premier - Dean takes that job - and Brian picks up a property to reno and appoints Danny to the Board. The new government under Dean will encourage reno's to that asset and will partially finance the upgrades - without a tender or RFP. I haven't heard yet if they will release the results of that flip and the profits which might accrue.

Utility Flip - coming soon - from your local cable provider.

News Break FPI FPI FPI

Looks like the FPI deal may be further off than thought. The company has just issued a News Release postponing the annual and special meeting of shareholders to seek approval for the sale of assets to Ocean Choice and Highliner Foods from August - 07 to an unspecified date before October 31-07.

The most interesting sentence in this Release is:

"Negotiations between FPI and these two companies are ongoing, and there is no certainty that definitive agreements and transactions will result."

Ignorance and no Leadership will keep us in Poverty.

While we are rich in natural resources - we are poor in knowledge.

This harms us terribly.

Morris (Maurice) Budgell was on with Randy Simms this morning talking about natural resources - developments - giveaways - and then specifically energy. Morris rightly pointed out the success of Iceland through the use of renewable energy. Randy piped in - yeah but that's a totally different situation. Both of them were referring to geo-thermal power.

The implication was that geo-thermal is the main power source for industry and in general in Iceland. This is wrong.

The only difference between Iceland and Newfoundland and Labrador is we have 5 times the installed capacity of hydro-power - and they have intelligent politicians.

These wannabe and current politicians that block the show with absolute rhetoric - are keeping us back - they are retarding our growth - they are ignoring the real issues. Anybody could listen to us and conclude - treating us as second class citizens is okay - alright.

Here are the basic numbers:

Iceland has less that 1400 MW installed capacity.

Newfoundland and Labrador has over 7000 MW installed capacity.

Iceland exports 0% of it's generated power.
Newfoundland and Labrador exports 76% of our generated power.

Iceland uses 65% of what it produces for Industry
Newfoundland and Labrador uses less that 5% for Industry.

Iceland has 3 aluminum smelters with 2 more in various levels of discussion and or development and 2 of the existing smelters have been or are under expansion. 2 of Iceland's smelters when installed used more that 50% of all the energy Iceland produces.

Over 83% of Iceland's energy is hydro-electric with the remainder being geo-thermal.

All power exported by Newfoundland and Labrador is renewable hydro-electric. Of the 24% that we use ourselves a third of that is non-renewable imported diesel and oil.

Iceland is now the per-capita leader in the world of alumina production.

There are no other truths - this is why we are failing and Iceland is succeeding.

Further export of power from Labrador is the last nail in our coffin.

Randy - I hope you read up on this - but you are not employed to do so- nor am I. But the continued ignorance of our paid politicians should not be allowed to continue.

Next post will be on the "Icelandic Clause". You've got to read that one.
