NS 4 - NL 0 Please Premier Dunderdale may I ask a question now?

If this was the score of a hockey game - many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians would be disappointed. Unfortunately this is not a game or a short-term result - this is Nova Scotia politicians and corporate leaders giving us a severe trouncing on public policy and long-term vision.

Tourism

Well Marine Atlantic has crucified us again by increasing the cost for our Trans Canada Highway across the gulf - effective in February.

Over 2 million visitors in Nova Scotia in 2010.

1/2 million visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador 2010.

Ship Building

Nova Scotia 25 billion dollars Federal Contract 12,000 jobs - for over 25 years

Newfoundland and Labrador (Marystown) 0 dollars Federal Contract 0 jobs

Energy

Muskrat Falls

Nova Scotia gets all the cheap power long-term industrial and energy jobs

Newfoundland and Labrador pays for it and also sees its rates go up as much as 100% short-term construction jobs

Fishery: on the way to the Maritimes - watch

We have no reason to feel cheated right?

I would like to ask Premier Dunderdale - when is it appropriate for us to ask questions or criticize?

Repeat Performance

The Minister of Tourism has now announced he is happy with Tourism Numbers - Here again the Tourism Picture Book:

A Picture Book for Minister of Tourism Tom Hedderson

= 500,000 tourists to Newfoundland and Labrador every year.

= 1 million tourists to PEI every year.

Please ask yourself this - PEI with a fifth of our population and a geography we can all bike across - how is it they double our tourism.

Look at our Tourism potential and ask yourself - what are we doing wrong? Geography second to none from the Big Land to the Island what is it we do not have?

For starters our bureaucracy has chased the Ontario market through a dozen Ministers and not one of them have had the vision to change. We concentrate on our "mints on a stick" pitcherless plant logo for marketing initiatives.

Then of course there is the "Con" federation Bridge which has increased tourism by 300,000 people a year while our Marine Atlantic does everything possible to keep people out.

Then there is the HST 14% on everything in Newfoundland and Labrador versus a combined PST and GST tax of 10% and only 6% on clothing in PEI.

How can that be?
Well our past Liberal Government threw us into the HST scheme with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia while everybody else opted out including PEI. As a result we would have to get permission from NB and NS to reduce our taxes or we have to give them notice that we are leaving the system.

So Minister Hedderson if you think you and your government are successful in Tourism development - think again. Other countries in the world with similar scenery - wildlife - and environment are enjoying tens of millions of tourists.

And while we are at it - understand the bridge has also increased food processing - potato sales - and improved fish exports. Do any of you have a clue - or are you just stuffed with those BBQ hot dogs?

Congrats Nick Careen

Nick Careen has been named to the Board of Marine Atlantic for a term of three years.

And as much as this may be a political appointment by the boys from the shore - it's a good one and I think Nick's genuine passion and love of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as his commitment to that essential ferry link will do us proud.
You deserve it Nick and best of luck.

Now you are seeing the real divide between the real Tories like Sullivan and Hearn and the "Johnny come Lately" conservatism of Williams and crew.

Here's the announcement in part:

Appointment to Marine Atlantic Inc.

OTTAWA, Jan. 26 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment
of Mr. Nick Careen to the board of directors of Marine Atlantic Inc. for a
period of three years.
"I am pleased that Mr. Careen has accepted this appointment," said
Minister Cannon. "He has dedicated many years to community service in
Newfoundland and Labrador, and his experience will serve Marine Atlantic's
board of directors well."
Mr. Nick Careen is a graduate of the College of Trades and Technology
(College of the North Atlantic) in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He
began his career with the Canadian National Railway, CN Marine (now Marine
Atlantic) in 1965 and since that time has worked and volunteered extensively
in the province. He was a coordinator for the Placentia Area Development
Association for over ten years, while also serving as harbour master at the
Port of Argentia. From 1993 to 1996, he represented the Placentia District in
Newfoundland and Labrador's Provincial House of Assembly. He was also employed
as a community development officer for the Avalon Gateway Regional Economic
Development Inc.
