CBC News Newfoundland and Labrador ran a clip on their late night broadcast of Premier Kathy Dunderdale commenting on the latest CRA poll results.
The quote from Dunderdale was:
"When you take on stewardship you have to be prepared to make difficult decisions sometimes that aren't popular but it's always nice when you have support of the majority of people, we have that and I'm grateful for it."
First of all the Premier and her government do not have support of the majority of people - they are governing because in "a snapshot in time" in October the majority of people who voted supported them.
Now considering the Premier claims she does not govern based on polls - I suggest she does not use popularity as a reason.
The "difficult decisions sometimes that aren't popular" piece as Dunderdale and her colleagues would phrase it - leaves me very perplexed. The erosion of support is based on difficult and unpopular decisions?
Let's see - so the Muskrat Falls fiasco is a difficult decision that is unpopular?
Decisions on what?
Is this a confirmation that polls are taking place internally on the Emera deal and they are not showing favourably?
There is no doubt that this proposed energy project is causing a significant drop in the popularity of the Premier and her government. Now come the tough questions versus the tough decisions.
1. British Columbia forced a referendum on HST through a tool in their democracy chest and the government had to live with the consequences. The harmonized sales tax policy is similar to the Muskrat Falls development deal in that it involves changes that affect consumers on mass and revenue streams for government. Will this government allow democracy to govern and call a referendum on this deal?
2. What can be done to force a referendum on this issue?
3. Considering this one project could amass a debt load equivalent to our entire debt now - is it not appropriate for the Premier and her government to seek permission over and above a "snapshot in time" result in October?
4. Considering very significant information on this deal and financial consequences were not known at the time of the last provincial election - how does the Premier feel she has vetted the public on it?
5. Will former PC and Liberal Cabinet Ministers step to the plate as former Premier Bill Vander Zalm did in British Columbia and rally the people to demand a referendum?
The Muskrat Chill refuses to thaw and the relationship between people and the government is getting frosty. The Premier can choose to pile on parkas or warm up to the people she is "humbled" to represent.
When listening to the radio, watching television or reading the newspapers about events in this province, there seems to be a missing link. One that bridges all that information together and provides a way for people to contribute, express or lobby their concerns in their own time. After-all, this is our home and everyone cannot fit in Lukie's boat and paddle their way to Upper Canada, nor should we!

From HST to Muskrat Falls we continue to Giveaway our Future
Perhaps Premier Dunderdale and her Cabinet should take a message from the quote below.
"More importantly too, I think it sends a message to politicians throughout our country especially that they can't simply do things because it's the will of the premier or the party; that they have to in fact, on issues big as we see it here, consult the people," said Vander Zalm.
Former BC Premier Vander Zalm was referring to the vote on HST - which the government lost. Big issues are big issues and I can assure the reader than the Lower Churchill development is ten times more important to the people of this province - than the HST was to BC.
"They were the ones paying the freight and it was a benefit to the big corporations in our province especially those that are exporting our resources. They should contribute as opposed to getting a refund at the expense of the consumer," said Vander Zalm.
This quote - equally as important shows us that number one we should not be exporting raw resources such as hydro-power and two that we should be dealing with our HST fiasco as well. Currently New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador are the only provinces with the HST in place. It is yet another example of us giving up our sovereignty as a province - by allowing New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to have control over our taxation system.
The HST was put in place by the Liberals (Paul Dicks, Minister) and kept intact by the Tories under Williams and now Dunderdale. It just all represents a continued erosion of our ability to control our own future.
"For a decade, the Liberal Party has shifted the tax burden onto B.C. families. A return to the PST will be good for communities, good for families and good for small business. It will make life a little bit more affordable for working families. It will also ensure that British Columbia has control over its sales tax policy, now and in the future," said Dix. (NDP Leader)
We have given away our future in so many ways:
1. Media
2. Airlines
3. Fishery
4. Upper Churchill
5. Mines
6. Oil (refining)
7. Rural communities
8. Equalization
9. HST
10. Lower Churchill?
We really need to start demanding public process and that power hungry maniacally partisan politicians start to listen to us - the people. We all know our past was riddled with giveaways and we asked why. Now it's our turn to stand up and say NO to the Emera deal and Lower Churchill giveaway.

Repeat Performance
The Minister of Tourism has now announced he is happy with Tourism Numbers - Here again the Tourism Picture Book:
A Picture Book for Minister of Tourism Tom Hedderson
+
+
+
= 500,000 tourists to Newfoundland and Labrador every year.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
+
= 1 million tourists to PEI every year.
Please ask yourself this - PEI with a fifth of our population and a geography we can all bike across - how is it they double our tourism.
Look at our Tourism potential and ask yourself - what are we doing wrong? Geography second to none from the Big Land to the Island what is it we do not have?
For starters our bureaucracy has chased the Ontario market through a dozen Ministers and not one of them have had the vision to change. We concentrate on our "mints on a stick" pitcherless plant logo for marketing initiatives.
Then of course there is the "Con" federation Bridge which has increased tourism by 300,000 people a year while our Marine Atlantic does everything possible to keep people out.
Then there is the HST 14% on everything in Newfoundland and Labrador versus a combined PST and GST tax of 10% and only 6% on clothing in PEI.
How can that be?
Well our past Liberal Government threw us into the HST scheme with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia while everybody else opted out including PEI. As a result we would have to get permission from NB and NS to reduce our taxes or we have to give them notice that we are leaving the system.
So Minister Hedderson if you think you and your government are successful in Tourism development - think again. Other countries in the world with similar scenery - wildlife - and environment are enjoying tens of millions of tourists.
And while we are at it - understand the bridge has also increased food processing - potato sales - and improved fish exports. Do any of you have a clue - or are you just stuffed with those BBQ hot dogs?
