So things have changed as we "celebrate" 75 years of VOCM
If you really want to talk to the bosses - you will have to dial a 902 Nova Scotian exchange as that is where the head office is located. 745 Windmill Road, Dartmouth Nova Scotia to be exact. The Voice of the Common Man takes its ultimate direction from head office in Nova Scotia.
Now I want to talk about another Nova Scotian company - Emera - and what the deal with them means to our future in Newfoundland and Labrador. If Newfoundland Capital Corporation can be headquartered in Nova Scotia no reason to believe Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro won't follow the same path.
Real Debate should not be stifled by stick handlers in the stock market. Social media now keeps these pass the puck gurus in check. The power they believe they have is only surpassed by the stupidity of underestimating the people.
As Randy Simms says of himself - I love to debate - okay Randy bring it on. I'm not paid for my opinion nor do I have a boss with respect to my commentary here on Sue's Blog. Leave the protected booth and come out as a private citizen and debate the future of rural Newfoundland and Labrador, the fishery, the Emera deal and our place in Canada.
Below you will find partial information on a Canadian Press story yesterday. The purpose of my posting is to ensure everybody gets a complete understanding of what that company is - their holdings and most important where the head office is.
DARTMOUTH, N.S. - Newfoundland Capital Corp. (TSX:NCC.A) says its fourth-quarter net income fell 15 per cent from a year earlier as the broadcasting company felt both positive and negative impacts from changing licence and copyright fees.
The company, which has radio and television stations in six provinces, said Thursday its net income was $4.7 million or 14 cents per diluted share in the fourth quarter of 2010. That's down from $5.5 million or 16 cents per share in 2009's fourth quarter.
The company, which has its head office near Halifax, has stations in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as well as in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Among its holdings is VOCM in St. John's, N.L., and K-Rock stations in several cities. The company's shares closed up 18 cents at $6.93 Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

I like classic rock ,and a certain K-rock station I have listened to for years is now running paid political ads bashing the liberals for an alleged bill that if passed , will see local radio stations paying for certain services . I e-mailed the station manager and suggested that partisan radio was not what I bargained for , music was the only reason that I listened . He said that he wasn't sure what I was referring to , I explained , that was the end of him .The Harper government has very long fingers, could they be reaching there targeted audience , the young people tuning in for music and who might only hear these ads in their subconscious . Could the message in these ads be SUBLIMINAL? Are we teaching people to become accepting of conservative ideas , while developing an intolerant viewpoint of all others ?
I heard Shawn Skinner today on VOCMs openline show talking about the appointment to the CNLOPB. Of course Shawn Skinner would not say this was a patraonage appointment. We are all to believe its a coincidence Ms.Matthews has politicial and personal connections to the PC's and its leadership. How stupid does he think people are?
Randy Simms was actually defending "patronage" while talking to Shawn. "Whats wrong with giving someone a plum?" He agrues someone who works to serve a politicial master has sacrificed a lot and is deserving of a rewarding job paid by the public purse. Well Randy, if you are defending CRONYISM that can only mean one thing: You are one of the elites in a position to either give out, or to receive a "patronage" appointment.
VOCM, voice of the common man in deed!
Thanks Brent , I have stopped listening to Simms ,but, sometimes it is nice to catch up .
As I wouldn't want to be seen as threatening , I shall pose this as a question ?
Why does Simms need to DEFEND the INDEFENSIBLE ?
Why does he feel the need to question "RULINGS" by judges , that he deems to be too harsh or unfair ?
Why does he feel the need to "DEBATE" plea-bargaining , when he feels that the system is being too harsh on a person who has plead guilty to a crime ?
Why do we give credence to a talk show host ?
Through his VOCM show, Telegram editorials, CBC commentary, and position as mayor, Simms is heard by a large portion of the population.
I wish his views, which are often illogical and contradictory, could be given only the importance of that of an average citizen.
But with such a large audience this guy shapes the opinions of a lot people. His pontifications are wide reaching. Personally, I don't give him credence but his sway over public opinion is real and few people have such a soapbox as his.
He needs to be challenged and questioned on his views since many citizens most times don't have the information to form their own opinion and end up parroting public figures like Simms.
Rowe is a similar story, I'd be surprised to see him codemming CRONYISM either since I believe he has been the recipient of "political patronage" in the past.
I would love to comment Sue but I do not want to air dirty laundry in public. Maybe off line and more jest for your blog.
