...right wing fundamentalists like Harper and other Reformers. Make no mistake that's what they are - eerily similar to Bush and the gang south of us.
They will lie through their teeth - sell out their principles in a heartbeat if that meant power and the ability to control a country while gaining favour with the corporate elite. These people are puppets - as evidenced by Harper's lies during the last federal campaign. Lies that cost people billions of dollars. Lies that threatened the retirement of seniors and the budgets of entire provinces.
You see their holier than thou attitude with respect to things like same sex marriage - abortion - and troubled youth are simply that - attitudes - designed to evangelize the people - get the vote - and let the trouble begin.
Harper sold out his "judgemental" followers who are against abortion et al - those without tolerance - the minute he gained "power". The "progressive" part of conservative was gone the minute Harper became leader of the hostile "takeover".
The need to write about this today comes from a news story last night - about Scott Brison and his longtime partner Maxime Saint-Pierre getting married. Among the attendees were Paul Martin, Joe Clark and Frank McKenna - all progressive - all successful - and all believe in the Charter.
Scott bailed on the new "Conservatives" presumably after determining that leopards don't change their spots. Brison showed guts while Loyola Hearn and Peter MacKay stood silent - gutless as the remains of their party (PC) was eviscerated and tossed in the non-recyclable bin.
The PC's of old would not have us in Afghanistan - fighting a civil war between people and poppies. They would not have our men and women in uniform battling in a country where the rights of women or those of different faiths continue to be violated even by the "new" leadership.
Loyola and Peter - both of whom take some credit in creating this monster - Loyola by playing a key role in the merger (takeover) - and Peter by stabbing a fellow PC to allow Harper to rise to the top - sit back and take it all.
Canada will not be Canada under Stephen Harper and his right wing fanatics - it will be a poor take-off of the Republicans. Hearn and McKay know this but yet they do nothing - fear of admitting they were wrong - or loving the scraps Harper and the corporate gang throw to them. They would rather see Canada dragged into a world of intolerance and fear - dragged into conflicts which have more to do with protecting oil supply than protecting democracies - dragged into the conservative world of evangelistic moral values and legalized mob activities - than stand up - be men - admit they were wrong - and leave Harper dangling in his jungle of puppetry.
The PC's are gone and due to people like Harper and Hearn it will be a long time before the Progressive Conservatives will come back. I'm sure they will in time - as Canadians reject the war mongering - money loving - hypocrisy of these right wingers. Harper will not get a majority - unfortunately it will not be on the strength and courage of a Hearn or a MacKay. They are satisfied to sell out their own people and repeat messages spun by the likes of a Timothy Powers. You see there are Liberals and Progressive Conservatives who will be chameleons if it means a good government or corporate contract. They have money in their ass pockets - be damned with everybody else.
What will destroy Harper is the Quebecers and possibly Ontarians who will not trust their country or provinces to the ilk of Stephen Harper. They are smart though - they will get every last copper out of the feds - because they know Harper wants power at any price. They are filling their coffers while they have the chance and then they will vote Liberal or NDP or Bloc.
Norm Doyle knew better and just ducked his head and moved forward to his own retirement - guilty of inaction costing Newfoundland and Labrador billions of dollars - Loyola Hearn lacking courage to admit a mistake took shelter under Harper's wing and finds it easier to take mocking from his own people than face the ire of Harper - and poor Fabian Manning - he's just along for any ride (as short as it might be) and therefore will follow the crowd that accepts him. Remember the day - he sat along side the PM in the House of Commons - that's all it took for Harper to convince him that selling out his own people was okay. For those of you who may have thought Manning showed guts when he was booted out of the Williams caucus for speaking his mind on RMS - think again - Manning just did not believe he would be kicked out - else he would not have done it to begin with. A mistake which made him look courageous.
I can't wait for the next federal election - I can't wait to get rid of Harper and the boys in his back-room. The federation is fragile enough without these liars hiding behind a Bush.
For my part - because I stood behind Hearn in the last election as I felt that the PC's in the new party would keep Harper in check while possibly correcting regional disparities - I must work twice as hard to ensure these people never see a majority. As I said then - we will get a chance to kick the tires of this new minority - well I've kicked them and the rubber is flawed and the air is leaking out - they are going flat. I wonder were they made in China?
One final note - congratulations to Scott and Maxime - may they live a long and healthy life together.

Cripes Sue after saying what you just wrote, isn't it time to revamp the complete political system? Why are we allowing this system to stay in place? Isn't it time for an Orange Revolution?
Can't the ordinary Newfoundlander and Labradorian see that the Canadian political system and the economic structure it created for Canada has meant the death of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, since it is the prime reason that we have not been able to create a Macro Economy here despite the natural resources that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador was endowed with by Nature to have done so?
Sue at her best!! It would be hard to express in plainer language than that the bathos of deception into which Canadian federal politics has sunk. Our own victimization is made all the more painful by the fact that in that court there is a quisling who is one of our own.
Lloyd C. Rees
Voting .My God Sue,who are we going to vote for my dear.I dont have a Federal Representative from the NLfirst Party in my Riding .
Why would I vote for a Party that has caused so much damage to our province.Be them Liberial or the New Conservative Party.
Sue ,my dear ,Im on the out-side looking in.And ,what i see as far as Governement goes ,we as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are screwed .
Its time for the people of our great home to wake the F#@%-up .Sometimes n Life you just have to grab your friends and give them a Good shake.Living away for sometime has made me relise how lucky we as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians truely are. When the people of this province relise what the world relises ,then we might have a chance.
Its always about home Sue.Home and your place should always come first. And when we relise that as a nation ,we might start getting somewere as a collective.Until then we are nothing more then a nation being ruled by an overlord in a foreign country.Doesnt matter if that governement is in Ottawa or Great Britian. Its all the same. When we see as a nation then we shall have what they have in Quebec.

Cripes Sue, after what you wrote isn't it time to admit once and decisively for all that you were one of harper's biggest shills in NL last time and you were absolutely totally and completely:
wrong?
I did.
I believed the message and written promises by Harper - I believed Hearn when he promised custodial management - and I believed he and other PC's could control the man.
But I stated I would give it a try under a minority. I was wrong because they were liars.
I, too, voted for Harper and believed him. He told Newfoundlanders and Labradorians everything they wanted to hear and he even asked a question like: does Canadians hold the opinion that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians shouldn't be able to prosper in their own province under the country of Canada given their resources? I believed every word the man uttered and drank it up believing in my heart of hearts that this time I had gotten it right and I had helped elect a politician with ethics who was not going to let the province of Newfoundland and Labrador down. How wrong? Good God to think that I had been deceived so many times before by politicians and allowed my self to be roped in again, even though I knew all about the deceitfulness of politicians? I am now starting to wonder if I am suffering some sort of incurable ailment. How stupid of me to do such a thing? Wake up my dear, shake off your stupidty. There are no politicians who are going to work on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians behalf of creating an economy in the province with its resources. The deceitful devilish politicians will only work on behalf of themselves and they will only do what is going to rocket themselves into prosperity.
To create an economy in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador with our resources, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador will have to rise up and say "enough is enough" and do it themselves, otherwise the status quo will remain for eternity.
Come on folks let us do what is right, let us work on creating an economy right here with our own resources. Let us throw of the Yoke of Stupidity that was put around our necks by the Politicians and the Captains of Industry! No one else is going to do it for us, since there is too much pressure on our precious resources for them to be exported out of the province to create economies elsewhere!
So then you weren't wrong.
They were liars.
There was no way to see that they were not going to do the things you said they would do.
Pretty self-serving rationalization, isn't it?
"I believed every word the man uttered and drank it up believing in my heart of hearts that this time I had gotten it right and I had helped elect a politician "
- My God guys dont feel so Bad ,I went as far as joining the new Party and even gave Donations to the damb thing.I was so pissed at the Liberial Party that i would have voted for Jack Laton for God sake.
But,that still doesnt excuse the lies that were told by the Conservatives and the Liberials. Why do you think that If i did have the choice to vote for the NLfirst Party I would be jumping up and down.
Still ,thank-you for pointing out that fact Erik. Its sure nice to see that your back on top of things now that WJM and Mr Hollett are on leave from the servive.
I was wrong - I believed them.
Calvin, I read a letter to the editor in latest issue of The Independent and it was from a member of the NL First party. The person stated that the reason the party was not running candidates in the upcoming provincial election was because they essentially did not see the point as they agreed with everything Mr.Williams was currently doing. I thought that the NL First party would have been against what our premier is going to do with the Lower Churchill. Also I thought the NL First would be interested in recreating a nation. The only nation (country) that our Mr.Williams is interested in building is Canada. Or am I to interpret it the other way that the NL First supports Mr. Williams because they see in him a man that is going to do the right thing on Churchill and really is going to some day fully advocate for an independent NL?
Hello folks:
Come election time we will be a constiuency looking to change three seats......
If I am reading everyone's comments correctly it appears that after we unite on the blogs, open lines and editorials we can somehow get rid of the right wingers from Parliament.
Godd luck with that.........
Kalvinovich,..........I must say ,that if Im going to have something stolen from me or have a knife placed in my back,I just feel better about it ,coming from my own nation.
I do not buy my salt Fish from the Portuguese Store ,I support my own.
Then if we screw up ,we have no-body to blame but ourselves. But,this canada thing. All the Province needs is another Kick to the stomach from thease federalists types Kelvin .We dont have to worry about separtion form Canada.Dont worry ,thier Canadain .They will screw it up.Separtion from canada my friend is only a matter of time.
It will come to us.We dont have to rush out and get it.
Calvin I certainly am not doubting the wisdom of having such a party. It just surprised me a little to hear that they support everything the premier currently is doing.
Well Kalvin,i personally think that Williams is here for a Little while longer.Remember this guy,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Klein
he was hated by Anybody and anything, but the Feds learned to fear this man,Because of the support that he had from his people and Province. And ,the Message that he could spread across canada.I truEly think that Williams is t00ting the same Horn.Only time will tell if It Pays off for the Province or not.
As far as NLfirst Goes Kalvin,i think they state that as long as Newfoundland and Labrador is workable as a Province they will support confederation. If the issues concerning the Province are not addressed then they will choose to seek an Independant Newfoundland and Labrador.
Personally i think that we as a nation play right into the hands of canada. When or if Williams ever got stubbed again by the feds ,that would spark something never seen in this country befor.if newfoundland and labradors Champion is struck again by Canada, ooooooohhhhh!!! the back-lash that it would create would literally spell the end of Harper and the New Conservative Party for sure .
Nlfirst can do nothing now but support this man.He is doing no wrong in the eyes of the masses, but if something should happen that would make the people cry out for Williams to join the NLfirst ,well, there we go.Can I get a "Republic Of " from someone ,thank you brothers and sisters.
by the way ,Sue,have you by chance seen this Little Orange Tiger walking around your,........ah forget it!!!have A Good tuesday guys!!!

August 19, 2007 7:04 PM - you truley are a Gracious Lady.It takes a person with True Character my dear to admit when one is wrong. And ,like now ,you show us the qualities of leadership.God Bless you my dear.
What Newfoundland and labrador needs Sue,is a hundred just like you my dear.
Calvin, I think we have come to the conclusion that the current terms of union do not work for NL. Why do we need yet one more major confrontation to confirm this? If Mr.Williams was snubbed yet again you say it will be the end of Harper. That is all well and good. Harper certainly is no friend of NL. But whether it is Harper, Dion, Layton or the leader of the Marxist-Leninist Party(ok maybe not the communists) it will make no difference to the current situation that Newfoundland and Labrador currently finds itself in this confederation. I hope you are right when you say that Mr.Williams is going to go down in history as being different from the rest. At present with such high support in the polls Mr.Williams does not feel the need to reach out to people such as Miss Kelland-Dyer or the NL First Party. My opinion is if the day ever came that Mr.Williams did openly support an independence movement he would not be joining anybody, but would be forming his own party and then let everybody else fall in line behind him. But imagine how much stronger NL would be if Mr.Williams and Miss Kelland-Dyer could sing from the same song book. Throw in a few high profile artists supporting this group and their stated goals and then watch the opinion of our place in Canada change rapidly. But maybe even this would not be enough. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are a loyal bunch. Most of them are still extremely thankful to the money put in their pockets by confederation after a lifetime of living under the thumb of the merchant and the credit system.
Very Good points Kalvin
