SCHOOL'S OUT day 2

Friday was a little better for the voters - On the Open Line Programs Friday - Dwight Ball MHA Humber Valley - Leo Bruce PC wannabe Bay of Islands - Holly Rideout PC wannabe Lewisporte - George Brake Liberal wannabe Burin - Placentia West all made appearances.

Dwight Ball started the day right by discussing legitimate problems in administration and management of the healthcare system - and as a pharmacist seemed to float some specific problems - that if you listened you could grasp and agree with. I would like to see Dwight move into some other areas of discussion - displaying his experience as a small business person.

Leo Bruce used a line which should make us all gag - it's time for a change - a change of what? Diapers? He then made things worse by talking about roads and promising if he were to be elected - he would try to get a meeting with the Minister for Transportation. Listen Leo - give John Hickey a call now and ask him what you can promise in "real terms" - geez we should all be able to get a meeting with the man.

George Brake was on but for the life of me I can't recall a thing he said - this is a few times now where I'm just not tuning in to him. Perhaps it was the Marystown situation - which by the way deserves much more emotion that it is getting.

However, the day was completely ruined when Holly Rideout took the cake of crap when she said she wants to follow Tom Rideout's legacy and in fact she thinks Lewisporte should be a Rideout district. That's the way Holly - way to give a reason to vote for you. Why not propose changing the name of the community to Rideoutville?

Lorraine Micheal was on with Linda, but I tuned out after she congratulated Linda for the warning on the road conditions and then by commenting - twice - that she was on her cell phone - and was she being received? Apparently not - for me anyway.

And then we were treated this afternoon on "Issues and Answers" with golfer Tom explaining the wonderful effort being put into showcasing our tourist treasures. Come on, Tom in kayak, hard to beat that as an icon of outport vitality! I believe our predicament is much more complex than the consequence of the baffle-gab of political fools or even of the predations by Canada and Quebec. While the mass suicide of the lemmings may be only a myth, it is a metaphor for the behaviour of a people who foolishly follow one another in some senseless direction, in this case into oblivion. What could possibly be more foolish than the throngs of Newfoundlanders heading to Alberta for "jobs" when they have in their own possession such vast resources as to make Alberta, relatively speaking, appear poverty stricken.

No, we have to look elsewhere for an explanation for our sorry state , and I believe it is to be found in some deep-rooted impulse to self-destruct. How else can we explain such phenomena as the current outport "Canadian idol" frenzy, Danny's popularity, the collective embracing of the denigrating newfie word, the international fame of Meryl Vokey as a "screeher" or ,to go back further, the endorsement of the gross racial shaming by Joe Smallwood.

Whether ours is a case of natural extinction or merely of being caught in the changing of the "old order", it's hard to tell. Only one thing is clear and that is if there is to be any "yielding place to new" it will have to rise from the ashes; not from the fanning of the dying embers of what has ceased to exist.

Newfoundlanders who foolishly believe that confederation will lead them and this land they call home into some better future are in every sense a personification of the lemming myth.

I also heard Dwight Ball...How many times does he say "I Don't Know"? This just isn't good enough from the Health Critic. He should know and should be working on the areas to question the government. This the reason why I have no viable option in my vote.
