Listen Loyola Hearn - you are what we call in Newfoundland and Labrador "a wimp".
Just as the seal harvest is about to begin again the money gouging "protest" groups are launching their campaign to kill the industry.
So what is Ottawa going to do? Well now you might have to stay back 20 metres from the harvest site. In fact Loyola says - to the Canadian Press reporter - "We are getting out the information and we are encouraging people to come and see for themselves and then make up their minds."
Enough is enough - we now have Canadian fishers questioning the hunt because their fishing enterprises are bring jeopardized by these opportunistic zealots. It's time the Department's of Foreign Affairs and International Trade got off their a**es and took some real action.
It is time that Canadians demanded to inspect each and every slaughter house in the USA and Europe. We should determine ourselves if the pigs chickens and cows are being raised and then killed humanely. But no - we invite more people to a location which is clearly unsafe - where harvesters are using high powered rifles in an open environment. We put our own people at risk to justify a sustainable and humane taking of seals.
We have New Brunswick and PEI trying to distance themselves from the harvest and have reps from these to provinces nailing Newfoundland and Labrador.
For anybody that has any doubt - this is about fundraising - this is the key event every year and these groups plan to take enough donations off our backs to last them the rest of the year. There is no doubt the largest continual running protest is against this province and our sealers. We have thousands of species around the world at risk and close to extinction - but the largest campaign is against us.
Whatever Loyola says or even believes - his bureaucrats are leading him - by the nose - to another slaughter house - the cessation of our harvest. Wake up Loyola - you're a Southern Shore Boy - you need to protect your people - your culture - and the livelihoods of people you represent.
Let's see if you can get Ottawa to show some muscle and start demanding the same "observation" rights that these people are demanding.

Sue,
No one cares about the cows and the pigs and the lambs. They are not cute.
Even if the slaughter houses were inspected the anti seal hunt people wouldn't see a thing wrong with it.
That is the stupidity of it all!!
But the real stupidity is it is all about money, not seals.
Fools belive what they are told,Sue.Pointing the finger at yourself and relising your own mistake's has always gone to the better person .I don't have to be told that I would rather pay 10.00 CDN for a Flipper Pie form the Goulds then to buy some piece of Texas beef that is pumped-up with anti-biotic's,and growth Hormone's.But,C'mon ,who am I .I'm just some "Stupid Newfie" living In Onatrio that doesn't know how much shit that thease people put in my food.I should be happy that I have all thease smart mainlander's around me who are trying to get me to buy this "Organic" food and tell me what to eat.Just like how they told us how we should look after "OUR" fishery and manage that.See how they're modern way of living is so much more advanced then our "simple" back-woods way of doing things ,but hey ,who am I to say that they're methods of raising veal and chickens is not healthy. They have total control of the H5N1 bird flu going thru England, and the Mad Cow disease going thru western canada .They control thease things ,so i guess maybe we shoud just shut -up and trust thease "smart mainlander's".Beside's ,people today are really smart .They aren't going to be fooled by the mass media and into beliving that "OUR" methods are so wrong are they .My God ,we live in a modern world were all this information is out in the open ,right!!!!Hey they can't possibly belive all this mass media crap is actually true ,right? They can see that it's only a money maikng ploy from the crazed masses of "liberial fanatic's"that belive thier food can be grown in a city farm plot.
OH the Horror of "Canadain Mentality"
Ottawa ( meaning Federal bureaucracy ) totally controls response to critics of the annual seal hunt off its east coast.
It does this through the selective application or denial of grants and subsidies. This has the effect of encapsulating response to only those stakeholders it controls in the fishing industry. A review of this group will confirm it is the same relatively small number of people over the years.
Sue is dead on when she labels DFAIT as the primary source of Newfoundland's problems.
It is responcible for the annual pounding the Province's repution takes from the dissemination of half truths, misrepresentations, misinformation and sometimes outright lies. DFAIT directs this issue from behind the scenes.
When the Province takes "directing mind" control of response capability to issues raised by the seal hunt only then will it see some meaningful rebuttal to the fund raising efforts of animal rights activists.
The Province would do well to bring to the table other stakeholders. Countries, Provinces and other groups with an interest in proactively dealing with the excesses of animal rights activists. Structuring an entity to do this would be a good start. How about the Maritimes Atlantic Marine Mammal Alliance (MAMMAL)group? Include other industries such as hospitality, meat, fur etc on its board.
Nothing like a well placed and successfully pursued lawsuit for damages to get the attention of those who hold the dollar so dear.
Don't get too upset with the attempt of the other Provinces to point the finger of blame to us.
We have done little to bring any benefit to them. We have done little to recognize the slings and arrows they endure. We created our own problem there.
The current political regime is quickly developing a reputation for being litigeous when it comes to demanding only the absolute truth be spoken about political activities.
Well, here's a great topic to become active on to protect the good name of the Province. One well structured statement of claim seeking substantive ( millions ) in damages would certainly be a good start.
Ottawa will slog through the protest season again this year.
It's goal will be to minimize damages to Canada's (Ottawa"s) reputation.
If Newfoundland and labrador takes a few more hits to the economic value of fish exports or tourism then so be it. No big deal for Ottawa.
Our interests are easily subjugated to those of say Quebec or British Columbia.
As long as the Province continues to let Ottawa take the lead on this issue of seal hunt protest response it will be responsible for what happens to our reputation and ability to rightfully pursue a humanely conducted sustainably managed seal hunt.
When oh when will we stand up for ourselves.
Thanks Mike for that - it contributes much to the discussion. When oh when is a good question - especially when some of our own are delivering Ottawa's message.
