Quebec uses subsidies to save and upgrade a paper mill...

Here we go again - "the Quebec Program" is successful in saving and updating the pulp and paper industry in that province.

Kruger will invest 200 million while Quebec will contribute $20-million non-refundable subsidy from the province, a $30-million energy-efficiency grant from Hydro-Québec and a $50-million loan from Investment Quebec.

In this way - Quebec has saved many high paying industry jobs - a renewed industry with the latest technology - and achieve significant energy efficiencies. The de-inking plant reduces the plants energy consumption of power by 46 MW's - and that 20% reduction equals almost 25,000 households.

The Company News Release says:

Mr. Bernard Routhier, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kruger, emphasized that this project will allow the company to improve its competitive position while offering its customers papers with high recycled fiber content. “Almost half of the fiber currently being used in our mills’ manufacturing processes is recycled. This project, in addition to our other recent initiatives, allows us to improve our environmental balance sheet even more,” says Mr. Routhier.

and
The project will create 200 full-time jobs with a total payroll of $50 million during construction, while purchases of goods and services are estimated to be $125 million.

This is great news for Trois-Rivières - now Danny et al how about Stephenville and Grand Falls-Windsor?

Hey ,WJM, over here Buddy .You want to see were the money that belongs to the people of Labradior is going .Blog about this my man,or are you in so much disbelief that you can't see it.OH ,pardon me ,it's the fault of the Newfounland Nationalist ,Repulican ,or whatever you call them, that Quebec has the money to do this for thier people .Sue,just another case in point that people refuse to see ,becuase it serves the bowl of the mass's. To hell with what is right ,and what is wrong. As long as the greater good is pushed down the throats of the few to swallow.Who the hell cares about them ,right. But,when thier "RIGHTS" are being questioned and thier rights are being pushed aside, then they run to the UN and cry "BOO HOO"Sombody is picking on Poor Canada .You can't do that.I might be going off on topic a little Sue,but this is just another example of why we need to "Air" the dirty laundry of Canada ,and Quebec .To show the world that thease people hide behind a cloak of lie's and deception. And that all thease "right's and freedoms" are just Smoke and Mirror's .That when it come's to money and matter's like thease the rights of the few,and justice for all do not compare to the "amount on the cheque"And,you can take that to the bank!!!!

For Anonymous... (no I'm not here in defense of WJM because he, nor anyone else needs my defense- but it does baffle me as to what he has to do with this particular entry/topic) Doesn't it, or hasn't it ever occured to you 'the money that belongs to the people of Labradior' was signed away, not by the people of Labrador, but by the government in St. John's, with no consultation, concern or consideration of the people of Labrador. Also, can you tell me where consideration is given, now, in the current negotiations regarding the'Lower Churchill' development? For most of us, it doesn not matter much, in the long run, where our resources go. What is wrong for us is that they are gone with no benefit to us. The 'where' is irrelevant, it is just gone.

Hi Lloyd,
And ,please pardon me for my lack of clarity .The point that I was trying to get thru was that the money that is being spent in Quebec right now on thease resource's ,in my opinion ,is stolen money.Stolen from the people of Labrador. To me this is there money that is being spent.
In regards to Mr WJM .Somehow, his rants in defence of this so called "just" governemt have been in my opinion ,absolutly rediculois. If he wishs to see what is going on in the center of the universe then look no further. In regards to the "signing away",and may God have mercey on my soul,( BECAUSE,I"M NOT DEFENDING SMALLWOOD)the deal was shady in the first place.Pushed down a certain Premiers throat for the good of the province. In regards to it being done in St John's ,that to me make's no differance. If Labrador City was the Captial of the Province the deal would have still been shitty ,with no respect for the people of Labrador.
As for the new developments going on now ,I don't believe that they should be going ahead in the slightest bit ,until the Federal,Provicail, and all effected party's ,and people can come to a conclusion that the resource's being developed will "benefit the people of Labrador 110%"
But ,were I think Lloyd ,that we are going to disagree on this is ,and may God forgive me again .That I do believe that Mr Smallwoods signing did have the best intentions for the People of Labrador, and Newfounland. But,in the end it was a raw deal forced down the throat of the Province as a whole.
Let me make this note though Lloyd."Yes",I was born on the Island portion of the Province, but ,don't think that for a moment that I don't believe that ther should be an equal representation in the house for all partys concerned ,or that the people of Labrador shouldn't be more involved in the development of there resources.A strong Labrador is a strong "Newfounland, and Labrador"
but,and I will end on this note.If the Federal Governemnt is so "just",and "right" ,why do they allow this injustice to continue to happen.I belive that it was denate that said," the deepest pits of hell are reserved for those that do nothing in time's of moral delimia"
Be it here or there. The money has to come to from somewere.I just think that the "ethically right" thing to do,is say your sorry when you know that you have done the wrong thing. And, until you can do that, don't preech the gospel when your burning down the pulpit.

Mr .C.

Why do you mention Stephenville when it is closed?

How much of a subsidy should we be putting in here and for how long?

It was bad enough that Danny offered a subsidy to Stephenville when it worked out to be more than the mill generated in revenue for the provincial government.

For the Anonymous, Mr C.,
It appears you really do miss my point. My point is that the people of Labrador have never had the right to 'sign on the bottom line' for any project here in Labrador. The point to that being that the St. John's government (rightly identified by you as Smallwood regarding the Upper Churchill) who did in fact sign it away - and, in fact, he could have JUST SAID NO - but he did not. I do believe he was more justifiably ignorant of energy futures than all governments have been since. Especially the current crowd who are just interested in selling it off and still no benefit for Labrador. Yes, I do believe it makes a difference that that government is located in St. Johns as opposed to Labrador City as you suggested....
