I have been interested in following the development of CVRD since its takeover of INCO.
Sue's Blog has run a couple of pieces on the structure of CVRD - its status as one of the largest iron-ore companies in the world - and the potential for Labrador outside Voisey's Bay and Nickel more so than with nickel giant INCO.
They also have a preference to set-up processing facilities closer to the ore body.
Today there another interesting piece on the business thinking of this company - and it may be great news for Labrador. It seems the company is not only interested in:
“As a mining, smelting and refining company, we produce usually pure nickel or intermediate products,” says Bill Kipkie, vice-president of CVRD Inco and general manager of CVRD Inco special projects.
“What we are looking for is to create additional value for the company beyond what you get by selling it on the London Metal Exchange (LME).

Should be at the table with CVRD now - with power on the horizon and the immense ore bodies in Labrador - there must be some room for new value-added industries.

Unfortunately Sue, Labradorians don't get to make those kinds of decisions. We have never had, don't now and probably won't have those choices, whether we see opportunity or not. Doesn't matter much what we say. The decision makers have no real stake in Labrador except as a 'treasure trove'. That is why there have been so many bad and backwards decisions in the past and why they are still being made now. As soon as someone can figure out how we can control the decision making with 4 MHAs (perhaps all from different partys) I'm not sure how we can change it. I think it's pretty safe to say that no government from somewhere else (in this case St John's) can (even if they wanted to - which is unlikely to ever happen), make the best decisions for Labrador or Labradorians. Politicians in 'the Province' seem completely unable to grasp the simple concept that what is good for Labrador is, in fact, good for 'the Province'. Isn't it?
yes!
And Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes. How blind are they?
Absolutely Lp and Sue.
Maybe the late Ben Michelle was right when he said, "we are dealing with the wrong people when we are dealing with government, we should be dealing with the Corporate world" By we, i'm sure he meant, the people of Labrador.
