AS AIR TRAVEL COSTS ESCULATE IN LABRADOR
SOME MAYORS AND THE MP TAKE ACTION
SOME MAYORS AND THE MP TAKE ACTION
This week we heard the Mayor of Wabush express disgust and concern over what appears to be unequal treatment of Newfoundland and Labrador by Transport Canada.
It appears that landing fees in Wabush and St. Anthony are astronomically high when compared with Quebec airports . The airports referred to in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec continue to be operated by the feds and for some reason on our side of the border airlines servicing these areas are charged anywhere from 100 to 250 dollars more in landing fees.
Kudo's to the municipal officials who have brought this to light. This information followed a pretty tense week for Air Labrador and Provincial who have raised their prices - they say due to operating costs. If what the mayors have found out is accurate - they have a good reason to be angry.
Todd Russell MP for Labrador has told Sue's Blog that he and staff are researching the facts now - and will have some more to report next week. Russell was adamant that he would not stop on this issue until some equity was found for the people of Labrador. Russell says he will work with the communities and the airlines as well as deal with the federal transport concerns - as he will not stand by and see Labradorians be treated unjustly.
Sue's Blog will stay on top of the issue and report as anything new breaks.

Sue your blog should stay on top of this topic. I can't believe Transort Canada would charge airports in Labrador three times (3xs) the landing fees as it charges airports on the Quebec side of the border. It is outrageous the way this province gets treated by all Departments of the Federal Government. It is the reason we are not on par with the rest of Canada. We do not get equal dollars from Ottawa for infrastructure, industry, Federal Government jobs, research and development and it goes on and on. While Ottawa rakes in so many dollars from Newfoundland and Labrador's resources. Maybe we need a few lobbyists peruing Federal Government expenditures to the other provinces and that we demand our fair share?
Your blog Sue points out quite a number of inequities, please keep up the great work. We can see more clearly every day the reason we are in the mess that we are in Newfoundland and Labrador, even though we have been blessed with so many resources. These resource are working for others in Canada and not for us here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Maybe a few good lobbyists, if hired, would rectify the situation?
And I want to thank you for pointing out the way politicians skew things. My God we have enough on our plates here to figure out, let alone our provincial and federal politicians doing things in such a non-transparent way, it muddies the water and we are unable to figure out the reason they do things the way they do. I always had the belief that politicians looked after affairs as they arose and dealt with them fairly and squarely. Now I see that is not the case and it is one of the biggest reasons we are in the mess that we are in.
