If the PC government does not want to talk - so be it. The people will.
Don't miss this revealing and frank discussion on the Muskrat Falls deal. Join the conversation - you might just find yourself outraged by this current crop of MHA's!
When listening to the radio, watching television or reading the newspapers about events in this province, there seems to be a missing link. One that bridges all that information together and provides a way for people to contribute, express or lobby their concerns in their own time. After-all, this is our home and everyone cannot fit in Lukie's boat and paddle their way to Upper Canada, nor should we!

Sue, I sincerly hope people wake up from their stupor and take a serious look at this project. I blame the media for a big part of that, especially the Open Line hosts, because they are constantly sitting on the fence. As well, where are the investigative reporters in all this?
I just read through the report by David Vardy and it certainly highlights and supports many of the concerns the critics have. The attempt to develop Muskrat, independent of Gull Island, makes it that much more uneconomic, as he makes clear, but, of course, Gull Island demands a deal with Quebec. The only way for that to happen is for the feds to finally take on a real leadership role rather than pandering to Quebec. Sniveling cowards!
On the other hand, I am concerned about the negative environmental impact of this project on Labrador. It may be a big one in terms of the greenhouse gases these hydro projects create. As well, this is a beautiful river and to see these falls dammed is a real concern.
The people of Labrador should have the final say, as it is their land and they will get very few benefits other than construction jobs. Would infrastructure completion and a larger share of tourism be a better objective?
There are alternatives for the Island of Newfoundland, as the study points out, but they are being ignored in favour of the "big splash". I believe the haste to complete this project is more a monument to the failure of the PC government to articulate a vision than anything else. They are bankrupt of any real ideas or vision and pretty much have been since Danny fisrt came to power. The only thing that saved them was, first Voisey's
Bay, and then money from big oil. They know how to spend money to get re-elected and not much else.
In terms of alternatives, I like the potential for wind power and the whole idea of small sustainable projects that can feed into the existing grid. I also feel that LNG power to fuel Holyrood or a brand new facility, away from populated areas, would be more than sufficient to meet our needs and far less costly.
One final point: we will have at least 40% of the power going unused, and spilling over the dam, for the foreseeable future. There is no transmission line to carry it, there are no firm plans to build one through the Maritimes, and there is no buyer for that power.
It is obvious the government has their own agenda on this, they don't want any dissention, and they are afraid to debate it openly or give the people a say. It really surprises me that not one of their MHA's has the guts to stand up and be counted. Where are the young Clyde Wells and John Crosbie of this current PC government?
