Newfoundland and Labrador
The Investment Dealers Association of Canada (IDA) is pleased to announce that the Superintendent of Securities of Newfoundland and Labrador has delegated, effective October 1, 2007, the registration and renewals of Approved Persons and IDA Member firms to the IDA under the authority of Section 25.5(1) of the Securities Act.
The review of all submissions will be performed by IDA Staff in Toronto and upon completion of review; IDA staff will provide Members with a notice evidencing Registration under the Newfoundland and Labrador Securities Act and/or approval under the IDA By-laws and Regulations.
Applications and Notices for Individuals will continue to be filed via NRD.
Applications for registration of a member firm in Newfoundland and Labrador should be sent to the IDA’s Toronto Office, to the attention of the Manager, Registration.

So - I checked the other provinces and territories - they seem to have kept their registry control - what's up? Who made this decision? No News Release that I could find under the Government website...

Very interesting Sue. Have you tried to contact anyone in government to find out the thinking behind this? If so, I'm sure any response you get would be of interest to me personally, as well as your other readers.

I am hoping the "media" will do that.
Just curious though how the government here has still not issued a news release...
Maybe this is a good thing - but then there would be an announcement or something.
Sue - Do you expect the News Media to ask any hard questions?
I often wonder if the ruling government and the News Media are in the bed together?
I would suggest to CBC, NTV, VOCM and The Telegram that they ask some pertinent questions on this and many other subjects on which questions by the News Media have never been asked.
If I were to take a guess, I would say that the News Media do not want to upset the apple cart. Governments control the Media and the Media do not want to upset the Government. There might be some sort of something lost if they do? Don't you know there are patronage plums dancing in front of their eyes as well? To ask the proper questions might put them in jeopardy of some sort! You know what I mean, don't you?
There is a very prominent mindset out there that services done on the mainland have some inherent value over doing things locally. From my experience that is simply not the case. If we as a people don't have confidence in our own abilities, and if the government spreads that myth - then we are lost.
No matter where you are in your thinking on our place in Canada we all have to change that mindset. We have to start at least start thinking like a country without apologies for it. That's not a separtist rant.
As one of the electorate of Newfoundland and Labrador, I would like an answer as to whether or not the jobs were delegated when the Provincial Registry was delegated to Toronto. I also would like to know why it got delegated to Toronto in the first place?
Can one of the News Media operating in this province ask the Premier why this happened, since we all need to have an answer on the reason for the outsourcing of any Registry to any place, especially when the need is so great to keep what we have here plus add much more.
I agree Sue, there may be nothing wrong at all. perhaps the decision to do it this way makes perfect sense, but it would sure be nice to know that or not. The lack of any press release bothers me as well.
