More Abitibi assets going to the block....

Now listen-up just in case our Minister of Business - Minister of Natural Resources - the Premier - the Leader of the Opposition - and Anna Thistle - miss it...

I can certainly see that happening - WAKE UP!

Abitibi is looking at selling it energy related assets:

READ THIS from the Fort Frances Times

MONTREAL —Abitibi-Consolidated Inc.’s drive to profitability could lead it to transfer the electricity generation assets of nearly half its mills in the coming years to a new joint venture being set up to hold the newsprint company’s Ontario hydroelectric plants.

Abitibi announced last month it will own 75 percent of the venture, to be called the ACH Limited Partnership, with the remainder owned by the Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec.

“Over time, I think we’ll look not only at the Quebec assets but all assets in the company as possible enters into the new Abitibi Hydro.”

Maybe more of our hydro-resources can be owned by Quebec right???

Are you out there? Are you listening? Do you care?
From what I have witnessed regarding the pulp and paper sector - the politicians are "not all over it" - and apparently very "naive".

This is about Ontario and Quebec. How does it affect this province?

I did.

There really isn't much value in the arrangement as far as I can see.

You are just fear-mongering.

Gee what else is new?

What else is new? Maybe that we see potential problems before they occur.
That hindsight stuff is becoming extremely expensive to taxpayers.

I'm sure the reader would appreciate your comments more if you identified yourself.

You see you made a comment that it was Quebec and Ontario only - then upon realizing you were wrong - you shifted to a fear-mongering statement instead of dealing with the Abitibi statement.

Indeed "That hindsight stuff is becoming extremely expensive to taxpayers". Let us try to avoid it by being astute in the future. Anyways why are we always making the same mistakes?

You are so right , Sue. A perfect example is the mind-boggling irresponsibility of the government's issuing licenses to Cooke Inc. to install salmon farming cages in the bottom of Fortune Bay: several already having put in place at Belleoram. This is so off-the-wall that it transcends even the "newfie" syndrome in the ranks of stupidity, but yet few are screaming, stop it!!.

As for those guys who prowl the web, posting their snide comments hither and yon but without the guts to identify themselves, they are nothing more than a pestilence to be endured; certainly not anything to be taken seriously in terms of what they may have to say. I'm assuming they are guys, because women have more intestinal fortitude than that.

Well as I see it this is a clever way to break the old 99 year contract between Bishops Falls and a 2 machine operation in Grand Falls. The mill is loosing money but Newfoundland's thurst for power is getting greater. I heard Abitibi and Bowaters have been talking for over 2 years now about this merge. Who knows what the future holds.....
