Hey MINISTER TOM - have a read...
Time to gut the belly of Newfoundland and Labrador Politics
Sometimes you have to wonder - where are we really in the whole scheme of things.
Who is doing the research to attract medical specialists to Newfoundland and Labrador?
By 2010 England expects to have 3200 more medical specialists than it needs...
So the Government and Opposition need to get off the mark and find a way to lure the specialists to this province by using what we have to offer as a lifestyle. Start now - and don't stop until we have a great package which counters the money offer we know will come from places such as Alberta and Ontario.
I don't recommend sending a bouquet of those candies on a stick we call our "brand" or "logo". Instead the real estate potential - the friendly atmosphere - the clean air and water - and the spirited adventure and beauty we have should be used to ensure the next generation has the benefit of this expertise.
Neither the Liberals or the PC's have put the right formula together to attract and retain these medical experts and that really is unacceptable. These are the things we want you to do as MHA's - when you can find the time away from counting your restaurant and gas receipts.
We have an aging population alright - the most concerning of which are the old ideas from retiring politicians - and the continued robbing of the political grave the media is bent on doing.
John Crosbie - What information can he offer on the solutions to the fishery?
Brian Tobin - What information can he offer on the economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador?
John Efford - What information can he offer on restoring the fiscal balance between here and Ottawa?
If you can find an answer to that - why did they not do what was necessary when in power?
We cannot continue to blindly dive into the barrel of incompetence of what was our miserable political and economic past to find the surface of economic renewal and growth.
When Crosbie can stump on the back of a Newfoundland train - I will listen to him talk.
When Efford can fish a Northern Cod commercially - I will listen to him talk.
When Tobin can stop stuffing his own pocket - I will listen to him telling us how to stuff the treasury of Newfoundland and Labrador.
When Clyde Wells lowers my power bill - I will listen to his wisdom.
When one federal MP turns on Ottawa while in Cabinet - I will listen to the promise of changing Newfoundland and Labrador's place in Canada.
When Bill Rowe leads the charge on a referendum on Newfoundland and Labrador leaving Canada - I will read his column.
Right now we are hearing Danny chastise the Liberals for bankrupting Newfoundland and Labrador - and before him Wells nail Frank Moores/Tom Rideout on the same.
When Newfoundland and Labrador has a Premier who is also a Lawyer and does not lead us unsuccessfully through a court challenge against a company or individual - I will heed their self-proclaimed legal brilliance.
Then when they leave politics - they begin the pontification of what is best for Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Abitibi mill in Stephenville was lost as a result of successive governments and Premiers who were negligent in finding solutions - before it was too late.
Labrador Power should have doubled that regions industry and it's population - instead it has built the wealth of Central Canada.
The fishery and rural Newfoundland and Labrador has been destroyed by these people and their ideas.
We need to take our Province back and find those who will stop complaining and get the job done.
The "lack of vision" demonstrated by the Minister of Natural Resources this morning on Open-Line and her Liberal and PC predecessors is the reason that - from a practical perspective - they call us "stupid newfs". Any jurisdiction who has the liquid gold of hydro - does not ship it out to develop another economy - when they are suffering from outmigration - an aging population - a brain drain - and a devastasted rural population. When industry sees that Premier Williams is determined to export our best energy resources to Central Canada - the Maritimes - and/or New England - they are disinterested in negotiating with us to set-up factories and processing facilites in Labrador.
If somebody can demonstrate how any of our Premiers has shown vision as it relates to energy development - let me know. That is why Quebec is Quebec.

How much power and industry has been developed in Quebec - while we had "NO VISION".
How many people must leave this province - while we have and had "NO VISION".

Dead on. Well, almost!!!
"How can we make bricks if we have no straw?" We have been, collectively, lobotomized. We have been crucified and nailed inside the cursed "province" box. But we are not dead, not completely. The box is dense, it's dark in there,so, understandably it's hard for the entombed of conceive of any other existence. But isn't that the challenge of the few malcontents amongst them : trying to get the others to think outside that box - to break the damned thing open and set themselves free. .
It doesn't help to hear phrases like, "we need to take our province back". How can we take back something we never had, and which most never ever wanted. We did have a country though, and rag-tag and poverty stricken though it might have been, it was still ours. Who's waiting for some federal MP to keep the promise of "changing Newfoundland and Labrador's place in Canada." Gi'me a break!!!
By the way, the reason they call us "stupid newfs" is because that's exactly what we are, and as if that were not bad enough, the stupidity is compounded by ignorance.
I lived in Quebec in the 70's and witnessed first hand the miracle of their metamorphosis. Can this happen here, yes, but given the prevailing gutlessness, the chances are mighty slim.... so much easier to continue to let 'dem look after we.
