Oldie of the week #1

New Series - Old Headline of the Week!

Take this CBC Headline from 2002

ST. JOHN'S – The PCs say the province's recycling program is rife with political patronage. They say Nova Recycling has contract because its owner, Charlie Flight, contributes to the Liberal party.

Hard to know which way to turn ^<>^

Cronyism in the form of patronage has to be eliminated by Government because it is detrimental to Newfoundland and Labrador getting ahead with building meaningful economies. When Government leaders are concentrating on giving out contracts to their friends and families, the energy and resources that have to be spent so such dealings can be covered up; and then defending the moves they made after the cover is blown causes too much destruction in building economies here in Newfoundland and Labrador. It must be stopped. Every resource or business that comes up for development in this province should be tendered under the right guidelines and above board; and then let the best proposal win.

I felt secure in my knowledge that Premier Williams was going to ensure that type of activity would never occur in Newfoundland and Labrador under his tenure. I hope he will not destroy my trust.

....I hope he will not destroy my trust...

Where in Heaven's name have you been? Have you heard of fibre optics recently in the news? Plus a few other little gems in the past couple of years? Or is your trust really that hard to destroy?

I still have hope that he will rethink some of the things that have happened and he will reverse course and take this province into one with an open and honest government. Cronyism in the form of patronage is a very destructive practice to the masses but very lucrative to the few who are on the receiving end. Cronyism is probably the thing that has stunted the growth of this province more than anything else. If our politicians had been focused on seeing that NL resources were dealt out properly and used for the primary benefit of this province, we would have been a very rich province today.

I am a person who gives everyone a second chance and I will give this Premier the same.

Here on the Mainland/Labrador the truth deficit began with leadership nomination night..'time Labradorians stopped feeling like someone else's treasure trove...', followed by others, then blatantly broken (written/signed) promise to the Labrador Metis, followed immediately by broken promise to Southern Labrador regarding ferry service. Now there's no more talk of Labradorians being 'prime beneficiaries' of any Lower Churchill development. Pretty much way past the three strikes you're out scenario here. Guess it's different when you can re-write the rule book, and a meagre four, or rather three seats don't really matter politically?

Lloyd we are all part of the same province and we have all been screwed. Newfoundland is far from on par with Mainland Canada, but I am sure Labrador is much less since you do not even have a paved road. My heart goes out to you Lloyd. We must fight the good fight, and by doing so we cannot be silent. We must keep the blogs hopping and the open line shows buzzing. What you and I are doing here by registering our complaints is the beginning, let us not have an end to these complaints until there is really no need for them; that is when we have parity with the rest of Canada. With the resources that Labrador and Newfoundland possess, we should have had parity a long time ago. The problem, the politicians we elected over the past 57 years did not have Labrador's and Newfoundland's interest in mind. They were too caught up in doing what was right for their own interests for their own futures and not the interests for the future of the masses of the inhabitants of the province of NL. We must hold those not so honest politicians accountable. This province has been rife with them for the past 57 years. We must say no more to corruption, down with it! Corruption has no place in a just and fair society!
