Offshore Rigs seen as Prime Target for Terrorism

Federal Officials drafting amendments to legislation governing offshore Oil Platforms

Ottawa is responding to experts who believe that oil rigs offshore including Hibernia and Terra Nova and White Rose are a prime target for terrorism. Amendments seek to give more authority to regional organizations such as the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board.

Rigs off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia pump out billions of dollars in crude oil and natural gas every year, making them a prime target, some security experts say, for terrorists looking to disrupt Western energy supplies.

But the legislation that governs oil-platform operators was drafted in the late 1980s and makes no mention of security threats such as terrorism.
