Community Development Committee for Stephenville and region loses Union's Voice

Ken Thibeau - First Vice President - Local 1093 0f the Communications Energy and Paperworker's Union of Canada resigns his position on the Community Development Committee in Stephenville.

The spokesperson for the former Abitibi mill workers in Stephenville says frustration and non-support from every level of government caused him to resign. Thibeau points to yesterday's sitting of the House of Assembly when government members including Minister Joan Burke rejected the request of the Opposition - made on behalf of the former workers - to subsidize a consultants fee to prepare a proposal on potential opportunities for the infrastructure.

Thibeau states that he was close to resigning earlier. "I came very close to writing this letter after our Union's meeting on October 11-06 in St. John's with Minister Dunderdale and Minister Burke that was also unexpectedly attended by Mayor O'Brien and Mr. Cyril Organ. It was quite obvious to myself and President McKay as well as the consultants in attendance that they were brought in only to support the Government's cold-shoulder attitude towards our viable plan for OUR MILL ASSET" says the Union spokesperson.

The resignation is effective immediately.

Sue's Blog will add that Mr. Thibeau will be missed as he kept constant communication flowing on behalf of the former workers of the Mill.

Congratulations Kenny on your perserverance. Well all know someone is on the inside keeping this mill from being sold. Probably getting there pockets lined to keep quiet. I commend you on you tolerence to the political side of this battle. I know I would have quit a long time ago. Anyway life goes on for the rest of the former mill employees. Alberta bound for me again in January.....

I am so shocked in Mayor O'Brien, he is too quiet on this issue. When I voted for him I thought he would be more outspoken about the mill and do something about it but he don't realize how hard it is financialy on us.Will my family get to enjoy christmas this year, NO because we just don't have any money for that. My children will know that our Mayor has been to quiet and THANKS to our Premier for plan B. Everyone who can enjoy christmas DO SO including our Mayor. Merry Christmas.
