Yet another corrupt soul has entered our midst - and he wants to privatize hydro for his buddies and corporate colleagues.
Welcome to the world of a mega-millionaires greed.
If you think there is no long-term planning and strategy behind a 200 million dollar personal empire - then you are naive. That's the stuff these people are made of and driven by. Danny was not interested in the paltry salary of a Premier but he does like legacies and he likes money. Nothing wrong with that as long as you don't pretend to serve the people.
Not long ago - a misguided fellow by the name of Clyde - who had past corporate ties with Newfoundland Power tried to sell our crown jewel right out from under us - in one transaction. After 2 almost 3 years of protesting by the majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians - we stopped this giveaway. And who took credit? The Tories - who were opposition at the time.
They demanded that energy be generated by our own company for the people. They demanded those profits and control stay with the people.
Now under the name of the environment we are going to replace Holyrood with clean energy - perfect - now why in the hell are we replacing it with private power? Let's look at this!
Currently we own the generation which is Holyrood - we pay for it - when other power replaces it under Danny's scheme - we will pay for it but the Government of Italy will own it.
The PC's are privatising hydro under a plan which will take longer to achieve but the same objective will be reached.
Let's say the project costs 40 million dollars - the project owners need to recover the investment and make a profit - they sign a deal with hydro to sell the power of 20 years. Sometime during that period this project will be paid off. The mortgage is gone. Then this renewable virtually free power will not belong to us but belong to - in part the Government of Italy and their state run bank.
We will pay for the power anyway - the choice is whether we pay ourselves and own the asset - or pay somebody else and rent it forever.
Come on people - stop this giveaway of our natural resources.
