for reliability and relative cost. That's not to say that wind power is not important to Newfoundland and Labrador - it is. But let's keep it in its place and use our world-class wind resource for exports into power hungry markets - let's make tremendous profits for the people of the province while providing many entrepreneurial opportunities in technology and manufacturing.
In order to maximize our resources we must be strategic in our choices - we must keep the most valuable energy resources in our province - industry looks for the best deal and the best deal starts with energy resources you own and control.
Labrador has the potential of being comparable in development with Northern Ontario - Quebec - and Alberta. Labrador has all the potential of Iceland and more - we just need to recognize that and make the proper choices.
Wind presents a great opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to invest in green power for export with Central Canada hungry for whatever energy they can get their hands on. Quebec - Ontario - Nova Scotia - New England States all need more - but so do we - if we are going to grow the economy.
Wind provides power when the resource is available and is reasonably priced. Manufacturing and technology opportunities should be pursued by the provincial government - municipalities and local business. There are numerous opportunities for public - public partnerships for generation of power between Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and aboriginal groups, municipalities - and regional development authorities. In this way communities can directly benefit from adjacent resources. This is what we all want.
Hydro power must be kept for use in the Province - it must be developed as part of an economic strategy which focuses on industrial development and employment. This is the only way to stop outmigration and build our population into a young and vibrant society where our seniors see their children stay home.
Currently Danny Williams is determined to export our hydro and privatize our wind - this is not acceptable!
