Okay, now I understand that putting the Basilica back into shape is an important historic project and it is a cultural icon of our City and province, however...
I can only feel the absolute pain felt by the victims of child sexual abuse by clergy.
The christian brothers and priests, that were protected by this institution, while young boys were having their lives destroyed should not be celebrating.
As the boys (men now) were dragged through every court trying to get restitution for the crimes perpetrated on them the cleaning of the stones continued. As I drove by the church my thoughts were - they will never come clean - not really clean.
As the stained glass treasures are placed again - the word stained is most appropriate for the times. Stained with tears and broken souls waiting for somebody to care for them, in the same tender and meticulous way, as the window panes depicting rebirth.
I'm sorry people while the building is historical and cultural - we must ask is that the history and culture we want preserved - the cost of the reface as expensive as it may be does not come close to the cost of faith shattered by those who roamed beneath.

Indeed, much is blackened and tainted here and not just the church. This sort of thing is ongoing and no one is going to fix what's wrong here because everyone is so genetically related/ dependant on those in power that the fear based apathy will continue to rule lives here. Only those who have been victimized here truly understand this truth. Newfoundland is one big massive disfunctional family. The thing is this: No place and no people, have ever or will ever keep the march of change at bay. It's impossible. The future is on it's way and other corrupt people from other places will uproot the domestic crooks and their families. Then everyone will chew the rag about the new liars and criminals. Out with the old guard and in with the new. That is the world and the beat goes on.
