Are we worthy?

Lest we forget. My concern is most of us have. Today I will not celebrate Canada Day or a command not to salute to the Ode to Newfoundland.

The battle of the Somme is the epitome of who we were and who we could be. The danger was imminent but freedom was defended and those men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment came up out of the trench and pushed forward.

Today we are sitting in the trench, too afraid to move and too ignorant to know that the end will come anyway; the end of rural Newfoundland and Labrador, the end to our culture and language, and the end to future generations of our people.

I suspect our leaders may very well resemble the leaders of that day when our men - our future were thrown into that ill-fated battle. Our leaders today are not creative, are not strong, and are without courage. What type of person can watch their people and communities fall without participating in the battle. Our leaders are personally comfortable; that's all that matters. Our leaders are weak; they will destroy their own people instead of making those responsible for the fisheries disaster pay the liability.

The lack of strength and courage from our leaders has left a population in a state of defeat. Are we worthy? I think not!
