2011 - may turn out to be the Worst Year Ever

This time of the year - one becomes reflective.

You look for the good and try to overlook the flaws.

You question yourself about what you stand for and what you are willing to fight for.

It never changes for me. My children first - then my country - Newfoundland and Labrador.

In order to care for my children (now adults) - I am responsible not only for their individual well-being but also the well-being of the place they call home.

I came before them - therefore - I must do what I can to preserve and grow the prosperity derived from natural resources - both renewable and non-renewable.

Unfortunately 2011 has been a very regressive year - the government has done an exceptionally poor job of protecting anything other than their own power. They demonstrate no desire or ability to promote a vision. There are no answers for the future generations just debt, giveaways, and spending sprees.

The Muskrat Falls remains a dire concern as the project is not viable without us paying for it - while other jurisdictions grow based on it.

The fishery is destroyed and this administration is doing nothing to protect any chance it has for future generations.

The forestry sector is being ignored and as with the fishery is being downsized every year to eliminate any possibility of these sectors for future generations.

Oil - non-renewable - remains the sexy focus for Dunderdale. As a result the money will be grabbed as quickly as they can get the oil up in order to maintain power by purchasing small things for communities who have lost primary sector viability.

This government remains secretive, unaccountable, and arrogant.

They will promote acrimony throughout the public service and with small local business while stroking big business.

The fishers, loggers, plant workers, and skilled labour will be a secondary focus while increasing profits for the corporate elite will stay atop the priority list.

The Cabinet is filled with incompetence or disinterest and are simply along for the ride - while the three amigos, Danny, Dean, and Brian  continue to set the agenda.

Danny set the plans while in power, Dean will take over the Liberals to maintain power, and Brian has never really stopped playing in both the camps.

All this while investigative journalism in Newfoundland and Labrador remains virtually non-existent.

The new merchants of Newfoundland and Labrador are: Danny Williams, Dean MacDonald, Brian Tobin, and Ches Penney.

There are many of course that will play off this field to make their own personal fortune - and they will be the bag men for the parties.

I will be watching Nalcor and its executives, Ocean Choice, various land developers, and various energy companies - yet to be identified.

The House of Assembly remains closed and as I write this - no sign of pre-budget consultations.

And that ladies and gentlemen is the "good" that I have found. Stay tuned for the "flaws".

Upcoming: The Liberals, the NDP, the Media, Emera, and the Aging Population

Sue, good to see you back at it, even if the bleak picture you paint is very accurate. However, we may be down but we are not out! We will continue to oppose these assinine deals the PC government is trying to make.

A contributor to the Telegram(Mr. Woodman)wrote that we are essentially mocking democracy in this province and in Canada while, around the world, people are laying down their lives for the right to choose! I was struck by his sentiments and don't understand how we can be so complacent and unthinking in our assesment of political leadership. The inevitable outcome of the glorification of Danny was the total leadership vacuum we find ourselves in at this juncture. None of the political parties are offering anything by way of vision, integrity and honesty. They all seem to have lost their way and only a few of us are crying out for the kind of leadership that puts the province and its people ahead of crass political expediency.

Despite the gloom, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Let's hope the concerns you raised will cause a stronger and more positive response in people in 2012!
