Sue, the issue of electoral reform is complicated but one thing is clear: the current system is broken. As we all know, our democracy is in danger when so few electors actually participate in the process. Thus, you get a huge PC majority here when only slightly more than 3 of 10 eligible voters supported them.
Basic changes should ensure that:
1. Every district is represented by a member who garners a seat total of 50% plus 1, for an absolute majority in that seat.
2. Voting options be available in multiple formats, including online votes
3. Voters have more than one option to select from on the ballot. Thus, a voter can indicate a first choice, a second and so forth.
4. That a runoff election, between the top 2 contenders, take place if no clear winner is declared on the first round.
There is no failproof system and other options may prove more popular but we need big changes and this is a starting point for discussion. I will be unavailable to participate in your radio show due to work commitments but best of luck to you and the listeners.
