How can we protect the Arctic when we can't protect borders between provinces?

So the Russians have staked claim to territory in the Arctic - that is more territory - Canadian Territory.

They have planted an underwater flag and claim that because of continental shelf circumstances - they should have control and economic ownership of some areas which are Canadian.

Peter MacKay has responded - and Canada's government wants all Canadians to know they we will defend our borders.

Okay Canadians wake up. This man is unable to control the borders between provinces let alone with other countries.

Sue's Blog has informed all MPS's - the Privy Council - and the PMO that Quebec is distributing fraudulent maps. They are also submitting these same maps to the Government of Canada for hydro-electric projects under environmental review.

Not one MP in this country has the guts to speak up against this challenge to Newfoundland and Labrador's borders - while the majority of them would be steaming hot if Newfoundland and Labrador began to encroach on Quebec turf or if Manitoba started to move its boundaries into Alberta.

The difference is clear - and the main reason why this federation will not work. We have 7 federal seats. It is so important to the Conservative - Liberal - and NDP parties to make gains in Quebec - they will not deal with this significant issue. Where are all the think-tanks and national papers now? Where are the Globe and Mail and the Post - where are the Frazier Institute and/or the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives?

Look at this example of an NDP MP speaking out on the Russian Flag Planting issue in the Globe and Mail yesterday:

NDP MP Dennis Bevington (Western Arctic) criticized the Harper government on the issue Thursday, saying the Russian mission "demonstrates a troubling reality for Northern communities and all Canadians concerning Arctic sovereignty."

"It shows just how far behind Harper and the Conservatives are when it comes to asserting our legitimate claim to Arctic sovereignty," Mr. Bevington said in a release. "This clearly demonstrates what the issues are and the actions that we should be taking."

Where is Rex Murphy? Where is Jeffrey Simpson?

We are going to defend the Arctic? I don't think so!

Besides a few map makers can you explain how our provincial border is at stake?

makin no wonder we can't defend our own borders, ie the Arctic, we're too busy overseas spending endless Millions on other peoples countries when our goes to s%*t! But enough about that. "Thank you sir may I have another" should be inserted into the anthem somewhere.

As far as the Labrador/ Quebec border, good luck getting the feds to give a s%*t about NL, as we all know it got nothing to do with the issues and everything to do with the votes... sickening.

Sue, what can we do to protect our own borders as a province, in your opinion? We got to start acting on our own here, and say screw the feds, it's quite evident that we're the last thing on their minds.

How is the border at threat?

What should the fedeeral government do about the innacurate maps published in Newfoundland which don't show Labrador? Or which show Saint-Pierre and Miquelon as if they were part of the province?

Followed you link, saw the line which seems has created the knicker knots, then clicked on the little 'Romaine' project rectangle thingy, that opened up more... clicked on 'General Information' (beneath the file folder 'At a Glance'. This opens up to a map pic of The Romaine Complex. On there you will see the green line labelled Biophysical inventory area. There you will see that the 'complex' northern extremity ends just below, and on the Quebec side of the clearly shown 1927 Privy Council border which also says (not final). Mind you it does show the border there and it does show the project contained within their own border.
I still think if a simple map, no matter who draws it, could change the world in any wayh, then there'd be an awful lot of maps being drawn....

I was just watching RTR, Russian Public Television, and they showed extensive coverage of the Russian Academy of Sciences researchers placing the Russian flag on the Arctic ocean floor. Not surprising the Russian commentators made reference to a number of countries in the West also claiming territorial rights to this part of the world. However, the main country talked about was the USA while Canada was sort of just mentioned in passing. Sweden, Finland were also mentioned. Interesting!

Compromise Sue,right.Lets Compromise with Quebec,so they can dig in and get what they really want ,"The Lower ChurchHill."

All this talk about Quebec going after the Romaine is pure crap.Quebec knows it does not have one ,not one ,hydro Project that is worth half of what the ChurchHill is worth and they know it.So by throwing a monkey wrench and causing shit ,they feel that they can convince us to somehow join both together and extend them yet again for the benefit of Quebec and Canada.

Like I said and have repeated several times Sue.We dont need more inviolvement by the feds ,we need less.So just sign the check and kindly show yourself to the door .And ,while your at it ,Go F%$#@ yourself canada.

PS,when in the name of God are Newfoundlanders and Labradorians going to wake-up and see this country for what it is .A Den of Thieves and Liars

No my dear I was making a statement on appeasement in general. For too long Newfoundland and Labrador has cowered when it came to dealing with Canada. All i have to say is no more. How long must we send our children away to a distant land because of our position in this confederation.

I simply believe that it is not worth it.Yes we all need jobs and we all have to make a living, but at what price. If you want to leave that should be your choice and yours alone. There are far too many Economic Refugee's leaving our great province.

If we cannot use our resources to make our place in Canada better ,then maybe we should simply grow a back-bone and leave. If they wont let us in ,then maybe its time to walk away from a door that has been slammed in our face.

As for our "Canadain" borders too the north ,please, this has to be a funny right. We have a federal governement that cannot run a fishery or relise what resource they had there. But,they do in the north .Like I said Sue,if Canada can F@%$ it up they will. What do you expect "EH" ,they're "Canadain EH" dont be a Hoser.

I just was listening to Ekho Moskvy (Echo of Moscow) and they were commenting on the dispute up north. They were all but laughing at 'our' minister of foreign affairs with his comments. The Canadian government is saying that there is no question of Canada's borders up north and that is that. They are putting their heads in the sand because the Russians are already claiming it. Ekho Moskvy is a very liberal station and would be the first to come to the defense of another nation but not here.

So what does that all have to do with NL. Well that same attitute that Canada is taking up north is the same attitude our NL government is taking over the border and maps with Quebec. They are putting their heads in the sand, or some other place, the same as the Canadian government in relation to Russia. Think about it.
