Newfoundland and Labrador Export Growth leads Country in 2006

Leading the way in 2006

I would be surprised if this News Release by Export Development Canada does not find it's way into the House of Assembly today.
This positive news should be a reason to celebrate right?
Well the majority of the gain is from oil exports - a resource we do not process - and iron ore - a resource which is getting short shrift by the Premier.
Unfortunately our Agriculture sector is going to post negative as is our pulp and paper sector as a result of losing the Stephenville Mill.
Energy products account for 70% of our export while industrial goods around 12%. Of the industrial goods sector 98% is the iron ore shipment out of Labrador.
A small part of our export is related to high valued-added manufactured goods and this sector should experience considerable gain - great news! These goods include aerospace components - computer-related goods - navigation equipment - and industrial machinery.

We should take all of this info and put it to good use.

Iron Ore and Labrador are important and deserve the attention of the Premier. This should also include any new possibilities with CVRD.

We must fix the problem in Stephenville - the Premier must replace this industrial potential in that region. Considering the union representing former mill workers have put together 10,000 dollars of their own money to employ a consultant to put together a proposal for potential industrial uses for the mill assets - the Premier should approve a contribution from the province for 140,000 dollars for the work. The province did - after all - spend significant money on a review for the fibre optic deal.

More pressure must be put on the oil giants to invest in secondary processing - petro-chemical sector.

We must file suit against the Government of Canada for the mismanagement of our fishery.

We must force the federal government's hand to provide interim funding for our rural areas being decimated by the fishery crisis.

Positive factors:
Iron Ore
Oil projects
Voisey's Bay
High Value-Added manufacturing

Negative factors:
Pulp and Paper
Agriculture
(not mentioned) FISH

We must also review which government has produced or lost what!
