Oh, Minister Hearn what's up?
Tell us what's happening!
This news from Seafood Intelligence
UK retail multiple ASDA has this week joined calls for Britain's withdrawal from the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) "in order to protect the livelihoods of local Scottish fishermen and preserve fish stocks in the North Sea". The move has "delighted" fishermen's representatives. Earlier this year, the supermarket chain had joined its parent company ( World #1 retailer Wal-Mart ) in the way it sources seafood stating that within the next three to five years, it will only stock wild-caught fresh and frozen fish from fisheries that meet the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)'s eco-labelling standards. ASDA has already suspended the sale of North Sea cod in May this year (switching to fisheries in Iceland and Norway) "while it works" with EU Fisheries (DG Fish) and the North Sea Regional Advisory Committee to establish a stock recovery plan for the species.
Did you get that info while you were touring Danny? Did Norway or Iceland let you in on this little byte of market intelligence?
They will protect themselves. Will we do the same?
