France Germany and Russia have caught on and are forming an alliance to compete with the booming economic growth of the Asian block. They know that one of the fallouts of capitalism is that the greed driven system will go wherever costs of production are lowest while maintaining reasonable quality levels.
For instance Canada and the United States ( the home of NAFTA) are suffering tremendous job loss and manufacturing collapse as industry heads east to take advantage of wages pretty much equal to union dues in the western world. We are also learning that energy is key and reliance on foreign fossil fuels is not sustainable.
North America is still home to significant natural resources - needed for production of many goods regardless of where it ends up being processed. In Canada, more particularly Newfoundland and Labrador, we have both the resources and immense renewable energy resources. We must adopt policies which dictate that the use of those resources must be in conjunction with industrial development. We do have reasonable levels of control (not to be confused by corporate beggars as protectionism) - we possess the natural materials on our land and in our waters.
It is time that Newfoundland and Labrador began the process of understanding the real value of a resource such as the Lower Churchill or uranium finds - and right now our leadership is not demonstrating that they even have a clue.
When you have the President and CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador, Ed Martin, running around Ontario asking them to pick our low lying fruit - it's just as well we turn the clock back to the Upper Churchill and watch the re-run - over and over and over and over and over
