The Telegram reports today that Danny is feeling "concerned" about the exodus of families from Stephenville. How they verify that as a fact might be interesting to know. How about Premier "says" he's concerned... that might better reflect a factual position.
In either case Danny seems to have misplaced Plan B after he annoyed Abitibi. All the threats of expropriation and timber restrictions have left on the ferry with the workers of the mill. The mayor must really wake-up or fess-up on this mess and start pushing the province to meet its promises.
Currently the Premier is blaming the booming Alberta economy for our mass out-migration - that too is an excuse for his failure to deliver a working rural policy. If the Stephenville mill was still open these skilled workers would not be moving west for a few more bucks - they would be happily employed in Stephenville and continuing to enrich that region. Then again - his choice of Doug House to deal with that matter is questionable consdiering his plans' lack of success for 20 years.
Further if Danny was really concerned aboutAlberta he would be pushing for the feds to pony up on the fishery and deliver the promise to remove non-renewable resources from equalization. The Premier asked the PM candidates a few questions and Harper answered. Why then would the Premier ignore the promises which improved Newfoundland and Labrador? Outside of the fact that Charest is pulling his strings, the only reason I can come up with is the man is a bluff and simply asked questions - pretending to be interested in the federal election.
Now I have critisized - we need solutions for the people of Stephenville. I point again to a story I posted last week - that actually takes advantage of Alberta's economic boom.

I don't understand why they just don't move the whole operation to Labrador where there is an abundance of cheap clean energy which was Stephenville's problem. As well that is where the raw material is especially if the lower churchill goes ahead and all of that reservoir needs to be cleared.
Now the lack of an ice free port could be a deterent, but where's there's a will there's a way. Especially now that the TLH is supposed to be completed in 2009.
Dam if they can keep the North west passage open year round I'm bloody well sure an ice free port can be maintained somewhere in Labrador or on the Lower North shore accessable from HVGB.
For gods sake don't we give away 125 mega watts to Hydro Quebec in Labrador because we have no use for it?
The management of hydro resources relative to industrial development is ridiculous and any other jurisdiction that had this power would be tripling the population not dealing with out-migration. We can not let Danny export Lower Churchill Power.
