When listening to the radio, watching television or reading the newspapers about events in this province, there seems to be a missing link. One that bridges all that information together and provides a way for people to contribute, express or lobby their concerns in their own time. After-all, this is our home and everyone cannot fit in Lukie's boat and paddle their way to Upper Canada, nor should we!
Peg Norman's response was funny. Wanting the federal civil service presence in NL to be commensurate with our share of the population, would mean that our share of the federal civil service would have to go DOWN.
And Loyola calling for more Coast Guard presence? First thing HE did as MFO was cancel 70 CCG jobs and a ship to be stationed in Labrador.
I guess Labrador's not sufficiently "in the province" for him.
"would mean that our share of the federal civil service would have to go DOWN."
Here is the report done by the Harris centre about the declining federal presence. http://www.mun.ca/harriscentre/Federal_Presence_Report_FINAL_WEB.pdf
No creative accounting either include all federal positions, military, crown corps, federal jobs.
Oh and the federal jobs population should be discounted from the population to discount the what came first the chicken or the egg syndrome.
NL has around 6000 federal employees. That is less than one manned military base for christs sake. And to boot they are mostly all low level buracrats with no say in the buracracy.
I really don't know why I bother discussing things like this with you WJM it's obvious you and your federal coherts have no intention of supporting anything that would see NL come out from under OntarioAwa's thumb. The only thing you and your ilk ever do is rationalize why NL should be cut loose dragged out to sea and sunk.
If the federal govt wanted to save money they should move as many personel and offices as possible to colonies because housing and rent are cheaper there.
I too was disappointed with the cancellation of the proposed CCG ice breaker, research, hydrography survey. As well as the cancellation of the 500 million for HVGB over 5 years, cancellation of new threat emitters for training. http://www.cbc.ca/nl/story/nf_liberals_spending_20051124.html http://www.cbc.ca/nl/story/nf_harper_letter_20060109.html
The fact that peoples lives and livlihoods are being toyed with because of electioneering and party politics is just one more sign of the Systemically flawed country in which we live.

And where are your facts for this statement?
