I watched with interest today as all the news stopped - CBC Newsworld, CTV, and even CBC local television did as they normally do and focussed the cameras on the great province of Ontario.
In fact it was not to long ago when the First Ministers were meeting in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Premiers were gathered at a table in front of all kinds of media - briefing them on the outcome of their deliberations.
Well, the Canadian News Networks interupted that coverage because George Dubya was holding his own News Conference.
Today, however nothing was going to stop the progress of this Newser - Ontario was getting to manufacture the new Camaro for GM. There was Buzz zooming along with GM execs talking about the great day it was for Ontario. True - and CBC and CTV were not going to miss it.
Does this is any way put in perspective our real place in Canada. My god people it was just another car for Ontario.
Anyway how will Ontario keep driving that "cornerstone of the Canadian economy" without cost effective reliable power? They won't - industry will start to look elsewhere. Unless of course we deliver the power to the industry instead of attracting them to Labrador to plug in. This one should really be the peoples call and the potential export of more Labrador hydro power should be put to a referendum - preferably as a question during the next election.
"Auto manufacturing is a key cornerstone of the Canadian economy. Canada is home to 12 major vehicle assembly operations, with a 13th coming online in 2008. Canada is also home to 900 parts plants, and 170 000 Canadians work directly in the automotive sector."
That little tidbit from Industry Canada in May of this year. And we have how many of these jobs? What was that about fish quota's? They need more power do they? I guess they do. Are we that gullible as Mr. Ed Martin makes it appear we are, when he is delighted at the fact that Ontario might just have some of our power. Were you wined and dined or what?
Camaro News Release plus 1000 more jobs slated to leave will now also stay and Honda joins GM in Ontario.
Honda Release Here
Why is it foreigners got fish quota's? What did they pay for them? If Ottawa says it's because they were traditional fishing grounds prior to the 200 mile economic zone - I guess we will see them out drilling for oil and gas as well.
