Last year, more than 2,000 people took advantage of the opportunity. TransÉnergie Technologies, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie (the utility's transmission division), is pleased to announce the sale of a real-time power system simulator to a consortium of universities that includes McGill and École Polytechnique de Montréal. This $500,000 contract is part of an infrastructure project supported by the Canadian Innovation Fund.

The simulator will be installed at École Polytechnique in a new research laboratory dedicated to developing innovative approaches for planning and operating power transmission and distribution systems. It will be used to analyze the impacts of integrating renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, with such systems. An SGI Altix 350 computer equipped with 18 Intel Itanium processors will be the server platform. This is the first sale of a HYPERSIM simulator using the new generation of parallel computers.

TransÉnergie Technologies markets real-time power system simulators developed by Hydro-Québec's research institute, which has more than 30 years of experience in the field. It also markets EMTP-RV, a software program developed by the EMTP Development Coordination Group, of which Hydro-Québec is a member, and has worked with partner universities and the Hydro-Québec research institute to create SimPowerSystems simulation software, marketed by The MathWorks.
