Muskrat avoided Stats Can?

Muskrat Muskrat and the people who will be left to pay for it.

Yesterday's National Post - read full story HERE

Of interest: "The shrinking East Most projection scenarios show Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick all losing population over the next 25 years. This is because of their relatively older age structure, their small share of Canadian immigration and their tendency to lose people to other provinces. Newfoundland is projected to be the hardest hit, dropping to 455,600 under the medium-growth scenario from 526,700 in 2013. "

What will the debt loads be for that 455,000 people in 25 years? How many of our children today will stay - considering the debt burden placed on them? Will the population numbers then be worse?

We need a change now. We need to do some serious reflection - particularly on the Muskrat fiasco.

Landmark Oil Find - Great News for ???

The news offshore is good - another significant oil find off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Hundreds of millions of barrels of light sweet crude - lots of the best.

Now let's look at our cut.

Statoil is owned 67% by the people of Norway. They will be the primary beneficiary of our oil.

Newfoundland and Labrador is still not able to refine any of our own oil. Therefore refineries in Eastern Canada will be the beneficiary of the secondary processing.

Our population is not increasing despite the massive oil, mineral, and energy wealth.

The news is good - yes. The news is great - hardly.

How about our local media do a breakdown of the benefits coming from another of our natural resources. This might tell us and Minister Joan Shea why we have a shrinking aging population despite all the fabulous natural resource headlines.

Ironic - that today we are worried about the potential loss of the Come by Chance refinery where we process oil that is far inferior to our own.

It is superb news for NOIA - it is another sad day for the people of our province.

Too bad our politicians do not have the vision of their colleagues in Norway.

Population Norway - 1970 - 3.8 million
Population Newfoundland and Labrador - 1970 - 514 thousand

Population Norway - 2012 - 5 million
Population Newfoundland and Labrador - 2012 - 526 thousand

Guess it really depends on what we do with natural resources. Norway and this province are good comparisons relative to energy wealth - both hydro and oil.

This is just another giveaway.

Fix This!

While your sniffing perfume - changing underwear - hanging paintings - scratching your lotto tickets - having a puff or a swallow - or making excuses for your spending habits - find a way to fix this!

(numbers are rounded to the nearest 100)

............................1988..................................2006

Total Population 575,000...............................509,700

Years of Age

0-19.....195,500...............................111,700

20-39....195,700...............................132,400

40-59....111,400...............................166,100

60 +......72,500................................98,500

Add to that the estimate of population for 2007 is 506,500

Primary and secondary education costs record level - with 83,800 less students (0-19)
Health costs at record level - with 70,000 less people

People to have the $1000 babies are down 63,300 since 1988 (20-39)

The next generation following to have $1000 babies down 83,800 since 1988 (0-19)

The people who are generally in the middle to late career age up 54,700 since 1988 - and the ones leaving now to find work or joining their adult sons and daughters who have left after graduation.

People who are at the beginning to middle career years down 63,300 since 1988.

60+ up 26,000 people - including retirees who without pension indexing are continuing to have their disposable income deteriorate - and their quality of life diminished.

The fishery was destroyed by Ottawa's mismanagement - yet nothing is done. And now we want to turn our superior hydro energy over to Ontario - the Maritimes - Quebec - or even the New England States. They do not need more industry and their populations are growing.

Now let me make your day!

Here is a headline from today's Globe and Mail online:

Thirty-somethings drive 2005 birth rate to seven-year high...

and this paragraph from the story:

The number of births dropped to a 55-year low in 2000 but, except 2002, has risen every year since — largely because most babies were born to parents belonging to the echo generation (the children of baby boomers) had entered their prime childbearing years as of 2001.

Unfortunately for Newfoundland and Labrador - the thirty-somethings have left or are leaving and the generation following is diminishing to record lows. The price of oil can go to $100 bucks a barrel - and the only thing that will do is stave off our extinction - unless we start doing other things right.

I'll need that other glass of wine now Mr. Dicks.
