While our men and women are serving in Afganistan - President Hamid Karzai is turning his nose up to the principles of Democracy. CBC reported this morning that while the Afgan leader is prepared and going to meet with the Conservative and Liberal leaders he is not extending the same courtesy to Jack Leyton, Leader of the NDP.
Regardless of what your opinion of the war is - and our role in it - Jack Leyton represents a significant number of Canadians in opposing Canada's current mission. In a real democracy differences of opinion are embraced - and open public debate is encouraged. Karzai's failure to meet with Leyton to understand the other point of view demonstrates that Afghanistan is nowhere near embracing the democracy our men and women are risking their lives for.
This is a snub that all parliamentarians should protest.
And by the way Jack did ask for a meeting!
